“No One Really Wants to Face Roger in…”: Nick Kyrgios Reflects on Epic Roger Federer Match

In an interview with Laver Cup, Nick Kyrgios shared some special moments from his professional career. According to him, playing against the 20 time grand slam champion, Roger Federer, was really remarkable. In Laver Cup 2019, Roger Federer represented Team Europe alongside Nadal, Zverev, Tsitsipas, Thiem and Fognini. The tournament took place in Federer’s hometown, Geneva.

In the buildup to the 2021 edition of the Laver Cup, Nick Kyrgios talked about one of his most memorable experiences in the tournament. The Australian opened up about facing Federer.

Kyrgios’ memorable moment with Roger Federer

In a conversation with Laver Cup, Nick Kyrgios revealed his special moments from the Laver Cup. The Australian has been outspoken about how much he loves the Laver Cup week and how special all of the moments are.

When asked to pick one, he discussed the match against Roger Federer at Laver Cup 2019 at Geneva, Switzerland. Nick Kyrgios from Team World was selected to play against Federer from Team Europe at Geneva.

In the interview, he revealed, “No one really wants to face Roger in his home town, his backyard in Geneva. I had never been so intimidating in my life. I had goosebumps. Nick added, “The stadium was rumbling and I don’t think 1% of people were going for me in that stadium apart from my dad. That was a special moment in my career.”

Nick Kyrgios lost despite one set lead

Though Nick Kyrgios commanded over the first set, the Swiss clinched the match away from the Australian. Federer didn’t disappoint his home crowd as he sealed the rest of the sets. In the post match interview he said, “I need some earplugs next time, it was just phenomenal.” 17,000 tennis fan came to witness Roger Federer at his home country. The Maestro added, “I was hoping it was going to be like this and they didn’t disappoint me,” “Thank you Geneva.”

While Nick Kyrgios is delighted to be back again in Laver Cup 2021, Roger Federer has decided to withdraw from action for the rest of the year. The 40-years old is still struggling with his injury and hopes to return for the 2022 tour.
