From a flurry of devastating injuries and early retirement concerns to mounting a successful comeback, Austrian star player Dominic Thiem seems to have left the ghosts of his past behind. That’s what he would certainly have liked to think so, at the very least. In an exclusive interview on EssentiallySports’ FanCast, one of the ATP Tour’s most recognizable names was confronted with a hilarious throwback concerning… well, his rear side.

Dominic Thiem remains on the popular side of the tennis community despite his long absence from the tour and gradual comeback to the tour this season. Beloved for his courteousness and quiet demeanor, Thiem’s shyness was on full display as an interesting query came his way. The interview brought up the question of what Lilian Paul-Roncalli, his girlfriend, thought of a certain suggestive social media thread on him.

Starting off by delicately touching upon Thiem’s popularity as one of the circuit’s more sought-after players – off-court as well as on the court – the host, Noah Lack, gingerly asked the Austrian, “What’s your reaction to this stuff?” The “stuff” in question was a reference to a once-notorious discussion among netizens – especially Redditors – on Thiem’s well-endowed physique. A self-conscious Thiem, mortified at the old topic being brought up again, dismissively put it off, saying it was a long time ago. But he wasn’t let off with just one question about his physique!

Lack probed further, asking, “I’m curious… What was uh your girlfriend, Lily’s reaction to the Reddit thread and like, did she tease you about it?” Coy as ever, the 30-year-old replied, “I’m not sure if she if she read it. Um, but uh yeah, I’ll have to ask her because you guys just reminded me of that, you know. I was not… I was not hearing it for a long time apart from my physio from time to time. But yeah, I’ll ask her.

Despite joking about it, Thiem certainly had thoughts about how the changes might have happened. Between jokes and laughs, he explained that his training might have caused his glute muscles to develop. “My butt grew somehow because of all this… of all the serving or whatever. You know because always landing on the on the left leg, all this trampling, all this stopping, and uh I don’t know. I’m playing with a lot of power so that’s why all of a sudden my butt grew up,” said the World No. 95.

Training hard is part of the game, and Thiem is clearly no stranger to the toils that the court demands. While the spoils back then might have been more than what Thiem bargained for, now, he’ll surely be reaping the rewards of meeting the demands of professional tennis training. As he inches his way back up the rankings, the former Top 3 player looks ahead to a rewarding 2024 season.

Speculations in sports, especially when recurrent injury concerns loom large in the background, often tend to be hits-and-misses. With the rapidly changing dynamics of tennis, where one player’s fall is another’s rise, successful comebacks are hard to come by. But if there’s anybody who can pull it off, it is Dominic Thiem – the man who memorably broke into the men’s senior circuit as the first major disruptor of the Big Three’s dominance.

The numbers and patterns look encouraging, too. Close defeats against Stefanos Tsitsipas at Wimbledon and Holger Rune at the recently concluded Paris Masters indicate towards his recovering form and confidence. To go squarely by numbers alone too, Thiem’s 2023 season registered solid growth in his service games won record: from 77.7% in 2022 to 82.2%. The numbers currently hold just shy of his career average of 82.7%.
