Novak Djokovic’s Sunshine Double Plans Dissected as Andy Roddick Makes Concerning Assessment

In the last few years, Novak Djokovic has played fewer and fewer tournaments in one season. Since 2020, tennis fans have mostly seen him in Grand Slam events and a handful of Masters tournaments. However this year, he ensures that he will not miss some tournaments. He will compete in the Sunshine Double for the first time since 2019, and Andy Roddick is excited to see how he plays in the American tournaments. 

Since Djokovic is in his late thirties, questions regarding his retirement have popped up many times. The Djoker previously shared that there can only be one reason behind his decision to retire, and that is his desire to spend more time with his family.

The Sunshine Double is the first Masters tournament of the year and it kicks off the ATP 1000 season. Each player aims to earn points to move up the ranking table. Djokovic will also play in the tournament after some years of absence. Roddick, speaking in the inaugural episode of his podcast, said that he is excited to watch how he plays.

Roddick said, “It’s just not as important as the slams, and he’s been able to show up to the slams and play well and get results. I’m very interested to see how he comes out of the gates, uh, in an Indian Wells or a Miami, um, and kind of deals uh and deals with kind of pressure and the defeat and on an on a massive level”.

It is true that Djokovic has rarely participated in events that are not Grand Slams. Now that he has decided to take part in the Sunshine Double, it will be interesting to see how he performs here, especially after he failed to defend the Australian Open 2024

While Roddick wants to see how the Djoker will perform in the American masters tournaments, he believes that Djokovic was confused during his clash with Jannik Sinner.

Djokovic left floundering during the Sinner clash

Usually, Djokovic finds the crowd in the stands against him, and he uses their jeers as his motivation. However, that has started changing. Much of the crowd supports him now, and Roddick believes that this new change is one of the reasons behind his defeat against Sinner. “Roddick said, That was weird because he was having to adjust to the crowd cheering for him, right, so he couldn’t use that like visceral me versus you thing, and that was confusing”.

One could hear chants supporting Novak Djokovic during his clash with Jannik Sinner. As he enters the US, Djokovic will be supported even more vehemently by the crowd. Will he stumble in a similar manner or learn to find motivation in the support exhibited?
