Boris Becker has been inducted into the Hall of Fame owing to the unparalleled legacy he carved out during his heyday on the ATP Tour. With 49 ATP singles titles, the German tennis icon has undoubtedly managed to remain a legendary figure throughout his on-court journey. Even after his retirement, the former tennis ace maintained a high profile in the tennis realm, albeit as a coach. The 55-year-old’s most significant and successful coaching stint was with one of the ‘GOATs’ on the men’s tour, Novak Djokovic. However, after a considerable period of enjoying some glory, Becker and Djokovic parted ways in 2016. Reminiscing about his split with the Serbian tennis great, the Hall of Famer recently opened up about how the ‘perfect love story’ came to an end.

Prior to joining hands with Becker, the current world No.1 had set a precedent for his upcoming decade of dominance. The Serb had won three back-to-back Australian Open titles along with his first Wimbledon trophy in 2011. Thus, it became a pivotal phase in the Djoker’s career as his long-time head coach, Marian Vajda, had stepped down from his head coach role, but remained part of the team.

After partnering with the ‘Djoker’ in December 2013, the German tennis legend guided him to six Grand Slam triumphs on the tour. Under his tutelage, the Serb enjoyed two triumphant campaigns at the hard court major event in Melbourne. Even at the Wimbledon Championships, Djokovic emerged victorious on two occasions when Becker was there in his box.

Apart from Grand Slam titles, the current world No. 1 also amassed 14 ATP Masters 1000 titles during his partnership with the German tennis legend. However, despite enjoying some major success together, the collaboration came to an end just after three seasons. Emphasizing on his split in an interview with the L’Equipe, Boris Becker said, “Three years together, where we win everything, repeatedly…. Let’s say the book was written. I think he was tired, he took a break and I took one too. The perfect love story was coming to an end. There was nothing more.”

Apart from this, the former tennis ace’s stint as the technical director of tennis in Germany also affected his partnership with the Serb. He added, “At the same time, I became technical director of tennis in Germany, which no one talked about much. I wasn’t withdrawing from tennis, I spent a lot of time with the young Zverev, with the Davis Cup team for four years.”

Becker’s split with Djokovic, however, didn’t put an end to the former’s coaching stint, as he is now partnered with another ATP superstar.

After parting ways with the Serb, the Hall of Famer has recently taken up the coaching role for the Danish tennis star Holger Rune. The 55-year-old made his first appearance at Rune’s box at the Swiss Indoors, where he reached the semifinal round of the hard court event. Later, the Dane also secured a quarterfinal finish at the Paris Masters under the tutelage of the German former world No. 1 player. Now, Becker and Rune are all geared up for the ongoing Nitto ATP Finals, where they are currently playing the group fixtures in Turin.

Unlike Djokovic, before adding Becker to his coaching staff, Rune had an underwhelming time on the ATP Tour. Although he was under the mentorship of the highly successful French coach Patrick Mouratoglou, the Dane suffered early exits in several important tournaments. Following his first round exit in the 2023 US Open, Rune decided to part ways with Serena Williams’ former coach. It proved to be a wise decision as he immediately improved his form on the tour and qualified for the year-end ATP Finals.
