Roger Federer announced his retirement, earlier this month, bringing an extraordinary era to an end. The 20 times grand slam champion will compete in his last tournament, which will take place this month.

Everyone around the world is eagerly waiting to see the tennis legend do his last dance. As fans congratulated and thanked the former world number one for his fantastic memories, they also raised questions over his abrupt retirement as soon as the news of it spread.

Roger Federer gives in-depth details about his retirement

The former world number one played tennis for more than two decades before he decided to end his journey. What led him to this day? In a recent conversation with BBC breakfast, he opened up about the time he realized this was it.

He recalled the time when he was not able to play because of his knee injury. Since the last few years were arguably not great for Federer, he said, “When I still played the last match for Africa in Cape Town a few years back, I was very unhappy with my knee, and I knew, I was on thin ice for the last year.

Further, he talked about his attempts to make a comeback and the moment he realized that this was it.

He said, “Ever since I played Wimbledon last year, I tried to come back and but then I just could feel, there was a limit to what I could do and this is not the way to play or try to keep pushing and I also stopped believing in it to be honest and then I got a scan back a few months back and it was just not the scan also I was hoping for and this is then when very quickly we realized this was it.

But the injuries and surgeries have taken a toll on his body and left him with no choice.

Federer might play doubles with Rafael Nadal

At the Laver Cup inauguration tournament, the two tennis giants played doubles for the first time and astonished their fans. Notably, the 20-time grand slam champion recently talked about playing doubles as a part of his last tournament with his archrival and friend Rafael Nadal again.
