Over the years, there have been many legendary players from the United States that have graced the sport of tennis. From the likes of Andre Agassi to the Williams sisters, these players have enthralled tennis fans during their illustrious careers. Amongst them was John McEnroe.

A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, McEnroe was at the top of his game during the late 80s and the early 90s. He dominated his opponents during this period and went on to attain the Number 1 ranking. Additionally, he also won nine Grand Slam men’s doubles titles and one major mixed doubles title, reigning his supremacy across formats. Recently, he talked about choosing tennis as a career.

John McEnroe on becoming a tennis player and not a footballer

During the Club Random Podcast with Bill Maher, the 63-year-old opened up about picking tennis over football.

He said, “It wasn’t what I did. It’s more like the whole entertainment. Hopefully, at the end of the day, where people started to think tennis can be thought of and this was my goal. He thought it was the same way as other sports. Like, I’m not saying football because some of my buddies were football players and I’m not even pretending.”

Further, he went on to add, “That’s why I played tennis so I didn’t have to go on the football field, see these guys, poor guys get their a*s kicked. I mean it’s incredible like you see like what these guys go through. I mean, I’m lucky in a way.”

McEnroe on Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas’ Wimbledon spat

Kyrgios and Tsitsipas were involved in a heated third-round clash at the ongoing Wimbledon Championships. The latter wasn’t happy with Kyrgios’ antics during the match and called out his opponent after bowing out of the tournament.

Subsequently, McEnroe joked that the two will need ‘decades’ to make up after their Wimbledon controversy. Meanwhile, Kyrgios will take on Cristian Garin in the Wimbledon quarterfinals later today.
