Off the top of my head, hardly anyone would resist getting attention from Roger Federer. The ‘Swiss Maestro’, known for his athletic flair and effortless charming demeanor, is easily one of the most loved players in the sport. However, for Australian Jordan Thompson, 20-time Major winner Federer takes a backseat when it comes to celebrity sportsperson crush. Funny enough, he’s happy to snub Federer’s autograph for his favorite athlete.
The Aussie made good on his dream year after capping the season with noteworthy strides. He started strong by winning in Los Cabos and pocketing the Madrid Open doubles title alongside Sebastian Korda during the clay swing. He later finished runner-up in doubles at the French Open, but made up for that hard loss by clinching the doubles trophy at the New York Slam. Though his singles campaigns on the Grand Slam stage have been underwhelming, Thompson really extracted the best of his top career form on the tour this year.
With insiders, fans, and critics’ eyes set on the Aussie, it was about time that he opened up about his experiences. Subsequently, Thompson made an appearance on the ‘Deuce’ talk show to provide rare insight into intriguing topics, with one of them exploring his favorite sportsperson. While on the subject of Federer, the World No. 26 expressed that he wasn’t his favorite player, instead, that position is filled by an ex-NRL player, Brett Hodson. To much hilarity, Thompson explained how Federer being in the same sport as him partially contributes to the reason he’d be willing to snub his signed memorabilia.

He said, “He’s my favorite sportsperson by country mile. I don’t think I’ve ever asked for an autograph or a photo in my life and I’ve got a frame picture of Hodson at my parents’ house on the wall. I mean, I play the sport he’s playing (Federer), I see him in the locker room. I don’t care about this guy.”

Thompson storming the sport this year wasn’t just a one-off or sheer luck. The Aussie’s thirst to do better was amply recorded after he broke into the Top 30 for the first time this year.
Jordan Thompson reflects on lifetime dedication after new ground breakthrough
Australian sensation Jordan Thompson scripted history earlier this year in August after entering the Top 30 ranking of the ATP. Notably, only three players in the modern era have accomplished the feat for the first time at an older age. Following his breakthrough, the 30-year-old remarked on his stellar run and expressed the dedication it took to reach the esteemed level.

He told the ATP Tour: “It’s pretty special. Thirty on 30. I’ve been working my whole life to keep pushing forward. So hopefully I can keep going. Top 30 is a good milestone for me, but hopefully I can keep pushing on. I remember my dad putting in a lot of hours on the court that I probably never thanked him for, and my mom a lot of time driving in the car with me. So it’s a lot of sacrifice that goes into any professional athlete.”
With the tour-level calendar concluded, Thompson is likely enjoying the offseason before he takes to the court for the Australian hardcourt swing, slated to kick off in January.
