Carlos Alcaraz is shoulder-to-shoulder with Novak Djokovic when it comes to their face-offs. Although there is an age gap of almost 16 years and having won 22 Grand Slams more than the Spaniard, the Serb faces a tough challenge whenever he faces this young lad. Alcaraz leaves no stone unturned to showcase his mettle on the biggest stages of the game. Recently both of them met at an exhibition in Riyadh, where Alcaraz got the better of Djokovic. And, here’s what he said about the aging Serb.

The 20-year-old Spaniard got a sweet revenge for his loss at the semis of the ATP Finals this year. Coming from a set down and then defeating the world number one by a 4-6,6-4,6-4 margin in front of 40,000 spectators at the Kingdom Arena. Well, this is the start he must have wanted. Who after the ‘Big Three’? Well, Novak Djokovic now feels tennis is in good hands. Although the world number 1 was far from his best in Riyadh Season Tennis Cup, he heaped praise on the young Spaniard after the match. Djokovic feels Carlos Alcaraz is already one of the leaders of the sport and it’s fantastic to have him here. He added. Alcaraz would ‘carry our sport for the next decade’. In the post-match press conference, the Serbian was asked about when he first saw the youngster. To this, the 36YO recalled he had first seen him on the internet when Alcaraz was 12YO. Novak Djokovic felt it astonishing to see his achievements at such a young age.

After getting a bundle of praise from the world number one, Alcaraz also expressed his admiration for the Serbian icon. Here’s what he said, “It’s incredible to share the court with him in this event and in official tournaments. I am learning from him. After watching him win the big tournaments I always dreamed about being in this position and playing against him face to face. I am really happy to play with him and hopefully, I can keep going. He seems like he is 20 so we are going to share the court more than once. I want to congratulate him and thank him for playing this match with me.

Perhaps this will be an end to their camaraderie as of now. The top two ranked players are set to lock horns to indulge in the mega battle which kick-starts on January 14 at Melbourne Park. Both Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz had a good outing this year. The Serb won 7 titles this year including 3 Grand Slams while the Spaniard won 6 titles this year including a Grand Slam. Both of them have faced each other 5 times excluding the exhibition matches and 4 out of them have been in this year.
