Novak Djokovic’s controversial COVID-19 vaccine stance led to his deportation from Australia in 2022, barring him from competing in the Australian Open. But tournament director Craig Tiley now says he is open to commemorating Djokovic’s incredible career achievements at the event, perhaps by renaming a court after him.
In a recent interview, Tiley lauded Djokovic as “unbelievable” and said he “would be certainly a supporter of recognizing Novak in some way” at the Australian Open. Djokovic has won 10 Australian Open titles, the most of any player in the professional era.

Political factors complicate matters
While Tiley does not have sole power to rename facilities, he said he would provide input on potentially honoring Djokovic, given his unprecedented success at the tournament. However, Tiley noted complications in Melbourne Park facilities being government-owned. Any commemorations would need Australian political approval, which could be difficult given Djokovic’s polarizing vaccine stance.

The 2022 saga saw politicians insist Djokovic comply with national vaccine rules. With tensions still raw, immediate “Djokovic Arena” changes appear unlikely. But Tiley seems open to recognizing Djokovic’s legacy in time. He begins to say “Look, I mean, ultimately the naming of the arena is not my decision or tennis Australia’s because we….a lot of people don’t really understand the Wimbledon and the French and the US Open, they own the facility in which they run their events.”
Despite cementing his position as a legend Down Under, the Serb has had his fair share of controversial moments in his most dominant hunting ground.
Novak Djokovic’s complicated Australian Open legacy
For now, Djokovic’s legend status at the Australian Open remains complicated by last year’s dramatic deportation. His vocal vaccine opposition rubbed many the wrong way. But on the tennis court, Djokovic’s ten AO crowns are undeniable. A trophy record that may never be broken deserves permanent recognition.

While renaming Melbourne Park’s main arena after Djokovic may still face significant backlash, other options could recognize his accomplishments. For example, a Novak Djokovic statue honoring his record of ten Australian Open titles could garner wider support. A trophy display or photo exhibit showcasing Djokovic’s historic Melbourne achievements could also commemorate his imprint on the tournament. More modest dedications may be a compromise until tensions fully cool on all sides.
Novak Djokovic created both spectacular triumphs and political turmoil at the Australian Open. Craig Tiley’s willingness to commemorate Djokovic shows Hall of Fame players often leave complex legacies.
