The home of Novak Djokovic, Serbia woke up to the positive news about his victory in the vaccine exemption court case. The World Number 1 and 20-time Grand Slam winner won a stunning victory on Monday over the administration in Australia. It is a huge setback for the authority that has placed strict restrictions in order to curb the spread of Covid-19 related cases in the country.
Despite his victory at the hearing today, things are not looking so easy as they move forward.

In spite of his win in the proceedings, the Australian government’s lawyer stated to the court that Alex Hawke, the Minister in charge of Immigration, may still decide to use his ‘personal power of cancellation‘. This may jeopardize World Number 1’s participation at the Australian Open.

Djokovic’s brother, who has been speaking to Serbian TV said, “Night without sleep for our whole family, really rough moments. Novak has shown that he is persistent and that he believes in his ideals. He won this fight for the whole world.”
The judge had made a ruling based on facts, but the Immigration Minister is above the court. Novak is in a political whirlwind – the people in Australia are unhappy since they have been locked down basically since the pandemic started.

The 34-year-old Serbian arrived in Australia last week hoping to defend his Australian Open title. Instead, Djokovic’s visa was revoked and he was moved to a detention facility. He has been kept at the Park Hotel.
At the hearing today, Novak Djokovic was released from detention after the court overruled his visa cancellation. However, there’s a lot of assumptions about whether Djokovic will be detained again, and thus have his visa canceled for another time. The final decision rests on Australian immigration minister, Alex Hawke, on whether to cancel the tennis superstar’s visa.
