For 36-year-old Rafael Nadal, 2023 continues to be a year of uncertainty. Ever since his Australian Open chances were cut short by injury, the 22-time Grand Slam winner has been forced to watch on from the sidelines. Right now, Nadal is a major doubt as the 2023 clay court season heads for its climax. He had already pulled out of the ongoing Madrid Open, and after Madrid is done and dusted, only Rome remains before the 2023 French Open starts.

Tennis fans have been sorely missing Nadal in action on his favorite surface. However, there are some positives to take for Nadal fans from two recent interviews of Carlos Moya, Nadal’s coach. Even though it’s a race against time for Nadal to complete his recovery ahead of the French Open, Moya is taking things one day at a time.

Moya was recently passing by Madrid. French sports publication L’Equipe caught up with him for a brief chat regarding Nadal’s prospects heading into the French Open. According to Moya, Nadal’s progress is a ‘day by day’ process for the time being.

In his interview, Moya revealed that he had given Nadal a break on May 1. He went on to speak at length regarding the coach and player duo’s current rhythm in training. “Our rhythm? We do more or less an hour and a half a day and we continue to move forward day by day.”

Moya refused to comment on the current outlook of Nadal’s recovery. “It’s not even about being optimistic or negative, just observing the state of your progress on a daily basis”. However, Moya believes that both he and Nadal “will be very motivated” when it’s time for the latter to make a comeback. He also lauded Nadal’s fighting spirit. “Rafa is a warrior, with an indestructible mind”.

In a separate interview, Moya reflected on Nadal’s difficulties so far in 2023

Nadal’s reputation on clay is fearsome. However, the ‘King of Clay’ hasn’t managed to play a single minute of the 2023 clay court season yet. More worryingly for Nadal, he is going to turn 37 in June. All in all, he isn’t getting any younger. He may find his clay dominance in decline come the 2024 clay court season.

In an interview with RTVE, Moya reflected on Nadal’s missed opportunities in 2023. “This is the tour of the year for him and it has not been easy to skip Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid”. However, Moya ended the statement on a positive note, saying, “but he is a warrior and continues with the confidence of being able to compete soon”.

Moya also hit out at critics who say that Nadal takes several matches to bounce back to his top form following a lengthy spell on the sidelines. “It has always been an urban legend that Rafa needs many matches to get in shape.”
