Jannik Sinner is one player who has created a large fan base ever since he stepped foot on the court. The Italian player quickly overtook Matteo Berrettini as the Italian number 1 and gave hope to millions of Italian tennis fans of finally seeing an Italian Grand Slam winner. He has progressed far enough that he even has his own dedicated section of fan base that goes to great lengths to encourage him. It is none other than the ‘Carota Boys’.

The Carota boys were first seen earlier this year during the clay season and have now taken over as the most devoted fans of the Italian number 1, Jannik Sinner. 

Who are the fans of “Carrot” Sinner?

The Carota Boys are a group of six historical buddies from Revello in the province of Cuneo. Along with Enrico, they are Francesco Gaboardi, Alessandro Dedominici, Alberto Mondino, Lorenzo Ferrato, and Gianluca Bertorello.

“Our idea“, Enrico says, “is to support Italian tennis in general, then this idea for Sinner was born because he is number 1 in Italy, he is a young boy (he will turn 22 in August, ed) which we are happy to support“.

The boys also explained how the idea for the group first popped up. “First of all, because of the color of Jannik’s hair, since it is orange, and then because during a match of the ATP tournament in Vienna in 2019, he had eaten a carrot instead of the classic banana“.

The disguise was a huge success in a short period, as seen by the Carota Boys’ Instagram profile, which has over 10,000 followers.

When were the Carota Boys first seen? 

The six Carota Boys first appeared in the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome in May, but they weren’t stopping there. A few weeks later, they uploaded a selfie of themselves in front of the Eiffel Tower on Instagram: the boys in carrot costumes had arrived at Roland Garros and were about to make their Grand Slam debut.

However, they hadn’t reached the level of fame they had prior to the grass slam. Therefore, many who watched the tournament were probably wondering, “Who are the Carrot guys?” at Wimbledon. Five of the Carota Boys also went to Wimbledon to see their favorite player compete when the then-world No. 8 reached the semifinals.

Of course, they had to come to New York to attend the US Open, complete with carrot costumes and fresh carrots as microphones. They sat in the Louis Armstrong stadium, cheering Sinner on to victory. Sinner thanked them for their support during his on-court interview following the four-set win over Stan Wawrinka but assumed they had already departed the arena. The carrots, on the other hand, were just coming down the steps to get closer to their hero.

What does Sinner have to say about the Carota Boys?

Watching his fandom bloom into something he never thought of, Sinner is over the moon to have such dedicated followers. After his win over Wawrinka, he talked about the Carrot boys in the post match presser.

“It’s nice to see them every time that I play. I follow them also on the socials, and, you know, they make funny videos and everything,” he said. “Our relationship [has] just started. It’s nice to see them. I knew when they were doing this, that maybe they are a little bit different than the other fans. I guess that was the case, so I’m very happy to have them.”

Sinner is overjoyed to have reached such a high level at his young age. The Italian player has managed to create a strong fandom because of his exploits. The Carota boys have only started, and they will only grow further as Sinner becomes an even more accomplished player.
