Concerning Carlos Alcaraz’s Slump Highlights Roger Federer and Serena Williams’ Firm Career Decision as Tennis Takes a Backseat

The tennis community heaped admiration on Carlos Alcaraz for his outstanding first half of this season. In addition to reaching his maiden championship match of the French Open, the Spaniard secured his second Grand Slam crown in the following major event, Wimbledon. However, after his grass court triumph,  the young ATP sensation has been struggling to perform at his optimum levels on the court.

Even during his recent participation in the tournaments in China, the 20-year-old failed to taste any success despite some brilliant runs. Emphasizing the current world No. 2 player’s slump in form, the renowned tennis journalist, Jon Wertheim was forced to draw parallels with the tennis greats, Serena Williams, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal.

In the podcast show, ‘Match Point Canada’, Jon Wertheim brushed aside all the skepticism surrounding Alcaraz who is struggling to perform at his best levels. After his US Open semifinal defeat, the Spaniard failed to make amends at both the China Open and  Shanghai Masters.

In the light of his recent knockout defeats, Wertheim said, “I think the, the, you know, the numbers speak for themselves. And you look at what he did the first half of the year through Wimbledon through the middle of July. And you look at the results on the trail off since and, you know, losing to Medvedev the night where he didn’t quite have it at the US Open.”

While emphasizing Alcaraz’s poor form in the second half of the season, the 52-year-old opened up about how some tennis greats like Williams, Federer, and Nadal also used to struggle in a similar way. He said, “And I mean, remember Serena Williams, to some extent Federer, Nadal, they would essentially just shut it down and say, I’m out after the US Open. I’m not made to play September, October, November tennis. And I think we’re getting a little bit of that.”

During the conversation, the renowned tennis journalist mentioned the name of another ATP sensation who is struggling to find form.

Just like Alcaraz, his Dane colleague Holger Rune is also surrounded by questions about his recent lackluster performances. After experiencing a major breakthrough in the previous season when he won three ATP singles titles, the 20-year-old has faced a number of initial round defeats this season. Due to the same, Rune has now slipped out of the top 5 spots of the men’s rankings.

Notably, Wertheim said, “And I think the same thing, people who what’s going on with with Holger Rune. And I, I think for some of these players, they just hit a wall.”
