In the past, John McEnroe drew a similar comparison regarding the 23-time Grand Slam champion and was criticized for the same. The very first match between a male and female tennis player took place in an exhibition match, “the battle of sexes”; between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King, in 1973. And since then, comparison of male and female tennis players has captured the attention of the fans.

It all started with the ‘Superbrat’, John McEnroe making noise regarding Serena Williams and men’s tennis. And the same matter was revisited by Tony Jones at 3AW Melbourne, in 2017, where the latter asserted that Williams would triumph over Kyrgios due to her sheer mental strength.

However, this claim didn’t sit well with the Australian tennis player, and he sarcastically responded, And, we have officially seen it all…”

Kyrgios’ disappointment didn’t end just there. He further brought his record against the ‘Big three’. “If this is the case, Djokovic, Fed & Nadal would struggle against her? Since they all have had a tough match against me?” he tweeted.

And much to the surprise of the tennis fans, the former World No1 and 18-time Grand Slam champion, Chris Evert, came out in support of Kyrgios. As she responded to TJ’s assertion with, “I don’t know about that….”

When John McEnroe stirred a ‘Battle of the Sexes’ debate

It all started with John McEnroe drawing a comparison between him and Serena. Back in 2017, McEnroe revealed that his daughters don’t think that the 7-time Grand Slam champion could outwit the 23-time Grand Slam Champion. However, ‘Superbrat’ showed faith in his abilities and further stoked controversy when he mentioned that Serena would be ranked around 700 if she was playing on the ATP Tour.

As a response to the controversial claim, Williams requested McEnroe to keep her away from factually incorrect claims. “Dear John, I adore and respect you but please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based,” she said.
