Another day, another set of matches completed and more names advance while the rest tumble. From 32, only 16 players will remain and not all of them will be the well-established ones. Here are the biggest upsets of Day 5 of Australian Open 2019.
This was a big shock as Wozniacki was the defending champion. However, she was up against Maria Sharapova and either way, one of them was going down. The final score read 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the Russian’s favour and truth be told, it was a closely fought affair. Sharapova will next face Ashleigh Barty who knocked out Maria Sakkari.
The French player lost her match to American player Danielle Rose Collins. She suffered a straight sets loss of 6-3, 6-2 and the number 19 seed was sent packing. Collins will next face world number 2, Angelique Kerber.
The Belarussian World number 11 lost to another American, Amanda Anisimova. It was another straight sets victory with the score reading 6-3, 6-2 in the American’s favour. She will next play against world number 8, Petra Kvitova.
The Argentine was bundled out in four sets at the hands of Tomas Berdych. The world number 18 won the first set but proceeded to lose the other 3 to the returning Czech player. The score read 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in Berdych’s favour. Now, Tomas will be going up against Rafael Nadal for a chance to reach the quarterfinals of Australian Open 2019.
This was yet another shock as the number 10 seed progressed no further. The Russian lost in straight sets to Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut. Agut won the match with a score of 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 and will move on to face Croatian returnee Marin Cilic. Cilic had a titanic battle with Spanish veteran, Fernando Verdasco but eventually prevailed.
