Currently playing with the Brooklyn Nets, Kevin Durant’s career has had its own phases. Starting with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Durant also moved to the Golden State Warriors for three seasons. What hasn’t changed, however, is probably the core of his play. Durant is still leading the Nets this season with a 29.3 PPG average, his unfortunate injuries only slowing him down.

Ever since his early years in the OKC, Durant has continued to score on a higher level, usually nearing or surpassing 30 points per game. All in all, Durant is undoubtedly a great scorer. In fact, he is probably one of the greatest scorers the league will ever see. However, Durant might not have been so fond of that recognition alone.

In a recent article, the Athletic’s Anthony Slater referred to an older 2018 Durant interview. The then-Warriors player had just closed in on 20,000 points and was already a champion. Even then, though Durant did not like being called a ‘scorer’, he admitted that being one of the best did mean ‘something’.

“You want something to be remembered as. You want people to recognize your skills,” Durant said. “I put in the work, and basketball fans around the world can appreciate the effort I put in and the level of knowledge I’ve gained over the years from scoring”.

Durant is aware that many people like the way he scores. This includes his friends, who often reach out and ask him if he is scoring 50 that night. “I’m like, ‘Really? You think I can just score 50 whenever I want to?’” Durant added.

Eventually, that very enthusiasm and faith people have in him is something he has come to appreciate. He has indeed worked extremely hard to become that good. After all, the end game is to make sure the ball is in the net.

Despite the big three with Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden, the Nets have had trouble staying consistent this season. Part of this is because of injuries, which have kept each star away for a significant amount of time. Durant has been out since January and is currently recovering.
