Once thought essential by many, multivitamins’ rock-solid foundations as a popular supplement have shown some major cracks in recent years. Many studies have found various flaws in multivitamin supplementation, from poor absorption to the body discarding the excess. However, Arnold Schwarzenegger came upon a study that may help mend the now rocky foundation.

Arnold Schwarzenegger explained that some consider multivitamins as “expensive urine,” as the body discards excess vitamins through urine. However, the True Lies star cited a study that claimed something different. The Terminator acknowledged multivitamins as “low-risk” supplements. However, the bodybuilding legend wanted to inform readers about the comprehensive study.

“A three-part multi-year study examining more than 21,000 people concluded that popping a daily multivitamin sharpens your mind,” Arnie wrote in his fitness newsletter. Besides taking three years, the research covered their bases, eliminating variables to achieve reliable results. They also used placebos and pitted multivitamins against other supplements.

Although Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t disclose what other supplements the scientists used, they found two benefits. “Memory Boost: There was a noticeable enhancement in episodic memory – the ability to recall specific events or experiences,” revealed Schwarzenegger. The second one was an improvement in Global Cognitive Function.

The group that took daily multivitamins saw an improvement in “general brain health and performance.” Arnold Schwarzenegger also explained that multivitamins showed even better results in tests involving older adults. The 76-year-old fitness icon explained that many older individuals suffer from vitamin deficiencies that contribute to age-related mental and physical decline.

Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed the “significant” improvements in older subjects

“Deficiencies in certain nutrients like B vitamins, vitamin D, and antioxidants have been linked to cognitive decline,” wrote the former Mr. Universe. He explained that multivitamins provide a broad-spectrum solution, with multiple essential vitamins in one pill. The study suggested that multivitamins may even help mitigate inflammation and oxidative stress.

Arnold Schwarzenegger explained that in one part of the study, multivitamins showed “an impressive 30 percent improvement,” in subjects. These benefits manifested in their ability to recall things, cognitive function, and overall memory compared to the placebo group. However, the Hollywood action icon also highlighted the importance of proper sleep, diet, and exercise.

While multivitamins may indeed be more beneficial than some say, they are not magic pills. Poor sleep quality and a sedentary life with a bad diet have a severe impact on brain health.
