“Brother and I, We Laughed About It”: Arnold Schwarzenegger Giggles at Childhood Beatings From His Father Like a Happy Memory

Despite a challenging upbringing, Arnold Schwarzenegger often attributes his success to his childhood experiences. Recently, he shared some of his memories on the Jocko Podcast hosted by Jocko Willink. In his typical humorous style, Schwarzenegger shared anecdotes from his past, recalling the times when his father’s disciplinary actions involved belts and branches. Remarkably, the next day, he and his brother find themselves laughing about the entire ordeal.

Jocko Willink delved into the connection between Schwarzenegger’s challenging upbringing and his ambitious nature. Addressing whether the tough environment influenced his drive, Schwarzenegger affirmed, “Yeah, I mean, he would beat us with the belt or branches. There were different degrees of punishment.”

Despite the severity of the discipline, Arnold Schwarzenegger emphasized the camaraderie between him and his brother. They would compare the aftermath of their punishments, turning the painful experiences into humorous anecdotes. “I mean my brother and I, we laughed about it.” He humorously recalled how they would compare the severity of their injuries, with him joking about the pain from the wet branches and his brother teasing him about getting hit with the belt buckle on the forehead.

The Austrian Oak has not only recently shared insights into his challenging childhood but has also delved into his emotions towards his father while promoting his latest self-help book, “Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life.”  Earlier, Schwarzenegger candidly opened up about his feelings for his father, adding another layer to his reflections on his upbringing.

Arnie’s connection with his dad during childhood differed from the bond he shared with his kids. Despite challenges, he still yearned for his father’s presence. Schwarzenegger wakes up early, spurred by his dad’s motivational words. However, in his latest book, he avoids labeling it as closure.

“I was never looking for closure… I don’t blame my father for anything,” he emphasized. The former governor firmly believes in not pointing fingers or laying blame. His relationship with his dad defies easy explanation, and he doesn’t hold resentment. Understanding the post-war changes in his father’s behavior, a soldier, Arnie empathizes, acknowledging the shared struggles in Thal.
