California is struggling to contain car crash-related deaths in the state. Hence, Senator Scott Wiener is introducing a new road safety bill that’ll limit cars from going 10 mph over the speed limit. The 30-year-old son of the Golden states’s former governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has voiced displeasure at the bill on social media.

Pedestrians dying or suffering permanent injuries seem to be pairing out of control in California. National Transportation Research Group found that traffic-related deaths increased by 22% from 2019 through 2022. That number is higher than the national average of 19%. Hence, Senator Wiener has resorted to taking drastic measures.

An invasive measure for motorists?

Patrick Schwarzenegger took to X (Twitter) and shared a post by ABC7 Eyewitness News. It informed netizens that the new measure, Senate Bill 961, would “restrict” drivers from going 10 mph over the speed limit via special electric limiters. These limiters would be built into the cars starting in 2027. However, Schwarzenegger thought the measure might be too extreme.

“California gotta chill,” wrote the eldest son of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The bill has become controversial as many people are arguing against it, and others are voicing support. The California Senator sees the new bill as a necessary step to curb the state’s rising traffic-related deaths.

“I don’t think it’s at all an overreach, and I don’t think most people would view it as an overreach, we have speed limits,” Senator Wiener said in his statement. The Senator also said that emergency service vehicles would be exempt from the bill. He also informed that drivers would temporarily be able to disable the restrictions in case of emergencies.

Wiener also has another bill in the works. It would require the California Department of Transportation to make upgrades to crosswalks and bike lanes on state-owned roads for better pedestrian safety. California’s roads are not in the best shape despite Arnold Schwarzenegger authorizing $42 billion to rebuild them in 2006. Potholes are a common complaint. In 0223, the former governor himself had to take action.

Arnold Schwarzenegger had to get his hands dirty

76-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger had to take action to fix a pothole in his neighborhood. Last year, Arnold Schwarzenegger uploaded a video of himself filling in a pothole that caused safety issues in his neighborhood for “weeks.” Arnie said the “giant” hole formed after some construction work.

While the construction work was over, the city didn’t send a crew to fill the hole. So, Arnold Schwarzenegger took matters into his own hands. The former bricklayer and his team took the necessary equipment and did the job.

While Senator Wiener’s bill might prove effective in the future, it’s currently causing a lot of debate online. State residents like Patrick Schwarzenegger are not in complete agreement with the measures.
