One of the most anticipated films of this year is Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and the trailer looks promising enough for a watch. Set to release this month alongside Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, the movie stars Margot Robbie in the titular lead, and Ryan Gosling as Ken. However, he isn’t the only Ken, and neither is Robbie the only Barbie in the film. Simu Liu, famous for being the lead in Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, recently revealed in an interview that he and other Kens worked out a lot during shooting. However, Liu could never really go with Gosling inside a gym.

Simu Liu and Ryan Gosling bonded on the sets of the movie by bodybuilding together inside the gym. They developed the ‘Ken-ergy’, as is the term floating around the Internet. But the ‘Ken-ergy’ possessed by Ryan Gosling outdid his 8-years younger Simu Liu, as the Shang Chi actor admitted himself.

In a recent interview with People magazine, 34-year-old Simu Liu said, “Greta was very deliberate in what she wanted the Kens to do to bond, which was to gym together,” insisting that it was their director’s idea to spend time inside the gym. It would keep them fit for the role as well as learn more about one another.

Simu Liu said that no matter how much he tried, he “could not beat” Ryan Gosling in the fitness game. He continued, “No matter how early I went, he was always there. He always stayed later than me. So I really saw the discipline and I really saw the Ken-ergy”. It also created a “Ken-on-Ken rivalry” as would be the case in the film as well.

Ryan Gosling put in a lot of effort as Ken

Ryan Gosling’s abs were clearly visible, one that was the result of hours of work put into the gym. Simu Liu commented on that matter by saying, “Viewers will get to see the Ken-ergy — when they see Ryan’s torso. And the rest of him!” Liu also revealed that while they were working out, the Barbies were all having sleepovers. Besides Margot Robbie, America Ferrara, and Kate Mckinon also play Barbie in the film.

As for Simu Liu, he may lose in the gym to Gosling but has expertise in martial arts from his childhood. He also pursued his career as a stuntman early on before hitting it big with Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which earned more than $400 million. After Barbie, he will next be seen in Avengers: Secret Wars.
