Henry Cavill’s stardom reached new heights after starring in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013). Cavill had the look and physique of what many called the ideal Superman. While he was compared to greats like Christopher Revees, people loved Cavill as the caped crusader. Similarly, fans rejoiced when the British actor was cast as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. While the show received mixed reviews, again, fans loved Cavill. Fitness and cinema fans lauded the actor for his hard work to achieve the physique.

In an interview with Graham Norton, the Hollywood superstar revealed the process of looking shredded. Earlier, YouTuber Paris Demers created a short video explaining what Cavill had to do and how professional bodybuilders do the same thing. The fitness world responded in the comments.

While the actors who attain a superhero physique might look like the epitome of fitness, the process is far from healthy. In the clip, Henry Cavill said working out and dieting for years and months is only part of the job. While a strict workout and diet build muscle and reduce body fat, the final prep becomes a health risk.

The 40-year-old said that in the days leading up to the shirtless scene, he had to dehydrate himself. The process of dehydrating removes all the water weight from the body, making the skin paper-thin and giving the physique a shredded appearance. However, things got so bad that Cavill said he could “smell water” a day before the shoot. Paris Demers said competitive bodybuilders do the same.

The process of dehydrating is a risk if done without supervision. The rehydrating process might also cause problems if not done correctly. After hearing the explanation, fitness enthusiasts felt sorry for actors like Cavill.

One fan simply said the process was unnecessary. “Really no need for dehydration,” wrote the fan. Another fan echoed a similar sentiment, slamming the practice. “If Hollywood weren’t this toxic we’d have a different perspective of real natural bodies and not unhealthy bodies,” commented the fan.

A third fan gave another unhealthy example. They wrote, “Zac Efron used Lasix to remove extra fluids from his body while filming Baywatch. It’s F’ed up what actors and actresses have to go through to get that perfect body. And younger people follow that.” The fitness enthusiast was aware of the negative influence such practices have on impressionable youths. “Wow that’s hard for sure,” wrote one fan who had no clue before watching the video.
