After two decades of gradual progress, Dorian Yates dragged bodybuilding into a new era. The English bodybuilder became the first mass monster of competitive bodybuilding in 1993. However, that dramatic transformation was the result of a failed experiment. Known for his bone-dry conditioning, Yates explained how he messed up in 1992.

In a resurfaced clip from a four-year-old interview with Rx Muscle, The Shadow recounted his mindset going into the 1992 Mr. Olympia. While the bodybuilding legend knew none of his competitors could beat him on muscle mass, they could step on stage with extreme conditioning. So, the six-time Mr. Olympia decided to come in “shredded like a lightweight.”

Dorian Yates wasn’t satisfied with the results

Yates made a mistake in his quest to become as shredded as possible. “I over dieted, overdid it, getting ready for that contest,” confessed the former Mr. Olympia. While the bodybuilding legend added that it was “purposeful,” he didn’t pull the breaks at the right time. The 61-year-old also explained a possible reason for the failed experiment.

Yates said he took progress photos while attempting to get as shredded as his competition. Yates knew Vince Taylor, Shawn Ray, and Lee Labrada would step on the stage in their most shredded avatar, but he wanted to beat them on conditioning. Unfortunately, the 90s didn’t have smartphones or DSLRs, and the photos took a week to develop.

By the time Yates sat down to look at them, he realized that while his physique looked sharper, he had lost “a whole lot of muscle.” Although Yates turned out to be the biggest competitor on stage even after over-dieting, he wouldn’t make that mistake the following year.

The reign of the mass monster

In 1993, Dorian Yates didn’t experiment. The bodybuilder put on more muscle than ever before and used his experience to get shredded, this time, preserving the muscle he had built. Yates didn’t push it, and the resulting physique blew everyone away. The Englishman won his first Mr. Olympia, and everyone chased the shadow he cast in ’93.

However, The Shadow moved the goalpost every year for the next six years. Each year, Dorian Yates made incremental gains in his muscle mass while maintaining his conditioning. While Yates’ competition tried to catch up, few could match the mass monster’s winning formula. Hence, while the 1992 experiment didn’t turn out too well for the Birmingham native, it also helped him find the sweet spot, allowing him to dominate the Mr. Olympia stage.
