Dorian Yates’ quest to win the Mr. Olympia title
Dorian Yates recently took to his Instagram and shared a throwback video from his prime days of bodybuilding posing in the first ever Mr. Olympia competition in his career of bodybuilding. Looking back at all the sacrifices he has made, he writes, “I was never comfortable. From the start of my bodybuilding career back in 1983, all the way until 1997, I was never comfortable in my situation.”

He further continues that he had to leave the company of all his friends and live in a rough part of Birmingham so he could focus entirely on his goal. Even when he bought a bigger house after getting better at the sport, there was one thing that he could not afford – getting comfortable. He adds, “I couldn’t afford to be comfortable because if I did, I strongly believe that I would not have pushed myself to becoming the best version. Why would I need to if I had it quite snug?”

According to the legendary Yates, ‘You can’t grow if you’re comfortable.’ This was the motto that had led him to acquire 6 consecutive Mr. Olympia titles before he retired. The journey had always been very difficult for him, but he never gave up. Leaving his home at the tender age of 16, without any educational background, being thrown into the world trying out jobs so that he could sustain himself, Yates discovered his talents in the most unfathomable place.

In one of his posts shared on Instagram, Dorian Yates also shared how his life was in the 80s, when he had no idea how to get through the cruel ways of the world. In the post, he wrote, “This was my life in the early 80s … I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life at this point.” Struggling and figuring out the ways, Yates discovered his talent in the most unusual place.

He adds, “It wasn’t until I got into prison and discovered my talent for bodybuilding, that changed the trajectory of my life.” He had no roof over his head and so lived through the assistance he got from the government. Months after getting to terms with reality, he finally figured out how to go about with his life.
