A padel outing that ended in tragedy. That’s how Arnold Schwarzenegger lost one of the closest people he has worked with in Hollywood, someone he thought was “a wonderful chess partner.” So, as Michele Malenotti, 42, bid farewell to the world, Schwarzenegger turned nostalgic.

It’s the night of March 23 in Scorzè, Italy. Malenotti, who played a crucial part in Schwarzenegger’s Terminator look, was reportedly coming back at 3 A.M. from a sports club after a game of padel. While riding his Vespa, he lost control of the vehicle at a roundabout between Venice and Treviso, leading to a fatal accident. And as Arnie caught wind of the untimely demise, he reminisced, “I met Michele Malenotti because of his amazing work.”

“He designed fantastic jackets for Terminator and everything else we ever needed to look studly on screen,” the bodybuilding icon added. Imagine Schwarzenegger delivering the iconic “Hasta La Vista, Baby” line from Terminator 2 without his just-as-iconic leather jacket that made an appearance throughout the series. In fact, imagine the film series without the jackets altogether. Do you think the Terminator would’ve had the same effect? Likely not. And that’s how vital Michele Malenotti was. But he was more than just a colleague to Schwarzenegger.

“He was so much more than his work.” Celebrating Malenotti’s multifaceted life, Schwarzenegger emphasized his warmth and ability to bring joy to those around him. He was a great father and husband, absolutely devoted to his kids, a dear friend, and a wonderful chess partner. He was always making everyone around him smile. I will miss him, and my thoughts are with his family.”

As the son of Franco Malenotti – the former owner of Belstaff – Michele was no stranger to the fashion industry. He played a pivotal role in reviving the iconic brand and later acquired Matchless London, a heritage motorcycle and clothing company. The entrepreneur’s appointment as the creative director of Matchless London further solidified his status as a visionary leader in the industry. Although he passed away at age 42, it wasn’t before a timeless collaboration with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In 2017, the British company released a limited-edition collection with Arnie, which included three menswear staples – the Iron Bomber, the Cowboy Blazer, and the M47 Tank Coat. Matchless London even captured the Austrian Oak wearing a new edition of the M47 Tank jacket in 2019.

As successful as their professional collaborations may have been, as mentioned earlier, they were friends over and above everything. And just as Michele Malenotti was an inspiration to Arnold Schwarzenegger, the bodybuilding icon was one for Michele and his numerous ventures as well.

The Malenotti family’s contributions to the fashion world are undeniable, with their brands adorning the likes of movie stars such as Daniel Craig, Angelina Jolie, and Leonardo DiCaprio and gaining international recognition for their timeless style. It was Belstaff that developed Hollywood ties over the years, with its jackets featuring in moves like Mission: Impossible, Real Steel, and X-Men: First Class. But when it came to Matchless London, a lot of it was Arnie-inspired.

In July last year, the brand posted two pictures of Schwarzenegger in front of Gold’s Gym – one from 1974 and the other from 2023. They wrote, “Here’s a throwback to the good ol’ days when he was already conquering the world of fitness! Fast forward 50 years, and the legend himself is still embracing an active lifestyle with our Matchless E-bike! Age is just a number for Arnold, and he continues to inspire us with his dedication to fitness.”

Back in 2022, Michele Malenotti talked about Arnie and said, “Arnold is a friend, first and foremost, whom I respect from the bottom of my heart. Knowing that he appreciates our garments and embraces the Matchless philosophy is a great joy.” Despite his success in business, Michele was known for his humility and warmth, leaving a lasting impression on all. His sudden departure has left a void in the hearts of many as friends, family, and colleagues mourn the loss of a remarkable individual.
