The two most celebrated athletes in the Strongman competitions, often hailed as the modern greats of the sport, recently engaged in a conversation about the future of Strongman contests. The four-time World’s Strongest Man, Brian Shaw, and Hafthor Bjornsson discussed the changes that have come about in the rules of the competition.

Regardless of Shaw’s retirement, he has had a keen focus on the sport. On the other hand, because of an injury, Hafthor is taking some time off from it. However, both shared their opinions and discussed the new norms, such as not allowing bouncing during lifts.

Shaw and Bjornsson’s opinions on the new norms

Brian Shaw posted a video on his YouTube channel along with the Mountain, during which Shaw articulated an incident he witnessed during the Arnold competition, where athletes were allowed to wear briefs during deadlifts. This became the major topic of their conversation and they also raised questions about whether this should be allowed.

Bjornsson pointed out the quirk, mentioning his own record-breaking Elephant Bar deadlift done without any additional gear. They highlighted the importance of fairness, and that lifting records should be regarded under different conditions.” When I broke the record with the Elephant Bar, I did it raw how would that make sense if, someone tried to break it would that not count,” said the 6’9 strongman. Shaw echoed the sentiments and said, “I think it shouldn’t count, but why that was allowed I don’t know.”

Shaw emphasized that it’s important to be consistent when breaking records. When he did, he began with 890 lbs then increased the weight later by 1021 lbs. Similarly, Thor began with 1000 lbs and then lifted more heavyweights in the future. He believed that there should be the same rules for everyone to make sure achievements are fair and real. Nevertheless, before their discussion took place, a few days ago, Shaw shared an update with his fans on social media, sharing glimpses of his training for MMA.
