However, something unexpected happened as group members named names, and debated which celebrity could be called self-made. After one user commented how the $450 million net worth actor once said no one successful can truly claim to be self-made, the bodybuilding icon himself joined the conversation.

Why does Arnold Schwarzenegger think it’s a misconception to call him self-made?

Group member Multiplebees answered the question by quoting Arnie. The user found the 75-year-old’s 2012 University of Huston commencement speech “really beautiful.” Schwarzenegger said that he didn’t become world-famous on his own and to accept the fact would “discount” all those who helped him.

While many people commented their take on the Multiplebees’ comment, no one expected Arnie to reply. The seven-time Mr. Olympia explained his situation. He explained how he was born in a house without plumbing, how World War 2 ravaged Austria, and how it compelled him to chase his dream in America.

“I think I can safely say that self-made just doesn’t exist,” wrote the Terminator actor. He respected all the celebrities people listed in the comments section and acknowledged that they “worked their asses off.” However, like his 2012 speech, Arnie said he and every other successful person got help. “Somebody made you,” wrote Arnie and said those who accept the word “self-made” as “bogus” credit a list of people who helped them achieve success. The Austrian Oak also named those who helped him become a global icon.

The 75-year-old former Governor reiterated something he has stated in the past. Throughout his life not one, but millions have helped him become who he is. “Not me. Millions,” wrote Schwarzenegger. If millions didn’t love Schwarzenegger, he wouldn’t have become the Governor of California, nor could he successfully return to acting through Netflix.

Arnold Schwarzenegger also said when successful people realize they didn’t achieve everything themselves, they learn to help others. “You owe some help. Bring someone else up that ladder,” the bodybuilding legend stated.
