71-year-old Peeps Nicol got diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2005. When Nicol got her diagnosis, her husband Brian, a former soldier and triathlete, promised to look after her. However, a few years later, Brian got diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The incurable disease took Nicol’s husband from her in 2020. Battling MS and grieving for her husband, a little over a year ago, Peeps Nicole struggled with her fitness, and sports like bodybuilding or powerlifting were a far cry.

MS affected Nicol’s balance and ate away at her confidence in her physical abilities. However, at 71, the Englishwoman decided to join the local healthcare center. While she didn’t intend to use the gym at the healthcare center, she met TJ, the one who introduced her to powerlifting. Now the 71-year-old competitive powerlifter has wowed the bodybuilding world.

Peeps Nicol is defying Multiple Sclerosis with strength training

The powerlifter’s journey began when she saw the advertisement for the healthcare center. While it was the pool and cafe at the healthcare center attracted her attention, she learned her membership included a gym induction. Over the years, Nicol had gained weight, avoided physical activity, and was shaky on her legs. So she decided to start by losing weight.

However, her trainer, TJ, reminded Nicol of her younger brother. She informed her trainer of her condition, and he suggested strength training. While she didn’t know she would be training in powerlifting, Peeps Nicol felt the benefits. Her balance improved, she got stronger and felt better. Now 71, Nicole recently participated in her first powerlifting meet.
