Met Gala: Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Ex-Wife Maria Shriver Reminisces Upon Her Time at 2001 Met Gala

Award-winning journalist Maria Shriver is keeping an eye on the 2024 Met Gala. The annual gala makes headlines as the biggest celebrities from showbiz walk on the red carpet. However, in recent years, much of the public perception toward the event centers around the most extravagant or outrageous outfits.
Bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s ex-wife, Maria Shriver, remembers her time at the gala differently. As she watched the celebrities walk the red carpet this year, Maria reminisced about doing the same in 2001. She took to Instagram to write about the time when the Met Gala was “a little more low-key.”
Maria Shriver remembers the first Monday of May 2001 as a “wonderful night,” when she got to wear a “beautiful” lavender-colored dress. However, the biggest highlight for Maria was that she got to walk the red carpet with her parents and cousin Caroline. The journalist also included a red carpet photo with Sargent Shriver and Eunice Kennedy Shriver.

She even posted a photo with her cousin, Caroline Kennedy. Finally, the 68-year-old former First Lady of California asked her fans a question. “What do you think: Would we rock the red carpet in these same looks tonight?” asked Maria Shriver. Shirver’s fans wholeheartedly agreed with the mother of four, saying that her elegance would fit into any era of fashion.
However, this year’s Met Gala theme was quite different from the one Maria Shriver attended. The stars who walked the carpet wore elaborately designed dresses that stuck to this year’s floral themes. They walked in outfits with flowers, leaves, branches, and other elements inspired by spring. Interestingly, this year isn’t the first time Shriver has reminisced about her Met Gala appearance.

A memorable night for Maria Shriver
Maria made a similar post during last year’s Met Gala as well. The bodybuilding icon’s ex-wife posted a few pictures from her 2001 appearance. However, last year, Maria Shriver didn’t comment on the extravagant evolution of the annual event. Instead, she expressed her excitement to see which star would shine the brightest on the red carpet.

The photographs Maria Shriver uploaded last year also differed from those she posted this year. So it’s safe to assume that the 2001 Met Gala must have been an incredibly memorable night for her. Despite being a Hollywood action star, Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t attend the 2001 Mat Gala with his then-wife.
In fact, Arnie didn’t announce plans to run for governor in 2001 either. So, while Arnold Schwarzenegger’s exclusion from the 2001 Met Gala may be a mystery, Maria Shriver has made it clear that it truly was an unforgettable night for her.
