How far can any human being go to display his talents of strength? While the likes of Hafthor Bjornsson and Tom Stoltman can pull a truck tied to a rope and do other unbelievably heavy-lifting exercises, this strongman from the 1900s was in a whole different league. From biting through coins to dodging a bullet with his bare forehead to reshaping a horseshoe in any form desirable, he was able to take on such miraculous activities that blow people’s minds to date.

Joseph L Greenstein, better known by the name The Mighty Atom was a strongman popular in the last century. When his story was recounted by former MMA wrestler Bas Rutten on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, several bodybuilding and fitness fans who found out about it for the first time started losing their minds.

He could take down any number of people

Bas Rutten, a Dutch-American actor and former MMA wrestler and kickboxer recently visited the sets of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast in Texas. The two touched upon several themes such as the early days of UFC and other wrestling-related topics before landing on the discussion about The Mighty Atom. When Rutten found out that Rogan wasn’t aware of Greenstein, Rutten said “Hallelujah” in surprise and proceeded to tell him about the icon.

Rutten said, “This guy, 130 pounds, the strongest man in the world”. What already sounds like a fictional tale, Rutten too admits that people find it difficult to believe it But then he continued, “Police says, ‘we came there to save the crowd from him, not to save him from the crowd'”. As Rogan finds out more and more about him, he is increasingly bewildered.

He said, “He bit through nails, broke chains, and held down an airplane with hair… singlehandedly beat up 20 Nazi sympathizers”. Rogan rightfully ends with an exclamation saying, “Wow!”. The fitness world was equally stunned to learn about it.

The bodybuilding and fitness world had a hard time fathoming about this man

Here’s how some of the fans reacted:

“I Guarantee He Sold His Soul to Satan” wrote a fan who was drawing the use of the idiom to highlight that he must’ve done something bad in order to get these near-supernatural qualities. “Mfs bullet proof” wrote another fan who was expressing his shock at this man’s capabilities.

“That’s some Samson shit right there,” wrote another fan drawing an analogy to the Biblical figure known for his unreal strengths.“Only 5’4 and maxed out at 145lbs. Dude was a literal machine” wrote another fan who couldn’t believe that he was a human being.

“This man was on compound V”, wrote a fan making a reference to The Boys TV Show, where the superheroes are injected with Compound V to gain unbelievable strength. “Imagine this guy competing in MMA,” wrote another person who simply wondered about the destruction Greenstein could cause if lived today and was in the MMA.

Joe Greenstein’s bizarre stories just keep on piling up such as the one time when he was shot with a bullet, but it didn’t penetrate his skull. His presence and the stories associated with him are almost mystical. While Hafthor Bjornsson did once say that he and Tom Stoltman together couldn’t fight a wild gorilla and neither could any other human being, one might fancy the likeliness of The Mighty Atom taking on any wild animal.
