Arnold Schwarzenegger started his daily fitness newsletter, Arnold’s Pump Club, to help people find fitness. However, over months, the newsletter has evolved into a source of mental health and motivational advice as well. In this week’s Monday edition, the 76-year-old fitness icon wrote about a pervasive element in everyone’s daily life keeping them from reaching their goals.

Through the Monday motivation segment of his newsletter, Arnie hopes to provide his readers with some motivation to be productive throughout the week. This week, the Arnold Classic founder wrote about how smartphones, or what he calls “the rise of the machines,” affect people’s lives.

In his newsletter, the 76-year-old bodybuilding legend proclaimed the incessant use of smartphones as the “biggest challenge” toward completing goals. The seven-time Mr. Olympia acknowledged that smartphones are useful devices. They give people access to limitless information and help everyone connect with people they “would have never met otherwise.”

However, smartphones might be causing more harm than good. “They also inspire half-a**ing,” wrote the 76-year-old former politician. Smartphones today have evolved to become handheld personal computers that can also communicate with people. However, “They are designed to distract us from going all in,” The Terminator actor wrote in his newsletter.

Smartphones have evolved to take up the space in between everything a person does. Arnie explained it drives him crazy to see people looking at their phones in the gym. Instead of focusing on the exercise, “they’re on a machine,” Arnie wrote. Even when people are out with their family or friends, they keep looking at their phones. “It takes you away from being all-in at that moment,” explained the 76-year-old. Hence, it’s necessary to try, and break this cycle of smartphone dependence. Interstingly, Schwarzenegger himself doesn’t use a smartphone.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Arnie’s eldest son, Patrick Schwarzenegger, revealed his father doesn’t own a smartphone. The statement shocked everyone, as nearly everyone who can afford a phone uses a smartphone. However, the 30-year-old explained that his father only uses an iPad to communicate with people and even “refuses to text,” people.

Later, during an interview with CBS, the 76-year-old confirmed his son’s statement. Schwarzenegger said he only uses FaceTime to communicate with people because he likes to be face-to-face with the people he talks to. While the bodybuilder uses social media, he only does it to promote his ventures and interact with fans.

Hence, Schwarzenegger feels using smartphones incessantly distracts us from goals. Instead of focusing on the moment, people remain immersed in their phones, leading to sub-par results in whatever they are trying to achieve.
