Schwarzenegger explained that studies show that those who indulge in pre-workout carbs maintain higher intensity and also combat fatigue better during extended workouts. But here’s the catch: you don’t need to go overboard. The bodybuilding icon advises, “Unless you’re doing a workout longer than two or three hours, you don’t need to go crazy.” Aim for about 20 to 40 grams of carbs pre-workout, roughly equivalent to 1-2 slices of bread or a banana, paired with a similar amount of protein.

However, going carb-free isn’t taboo either. If you find yourself thriving on an empty stomach, like Arnie often does with his caffeine-fueled routines, you can still make significant progress. For shorter workouts under an hour, your carb needs decrease. You can opt for alternatives like coffee or a good pre-workout boost to fuel your session.

Also, if you’re on a fat-loss journey, cutting back on carbs pre-workout could align with your goals, provided it doesn’t compromise your performance. Although, it’s all about finding what works best for your body and fitness goals. Whether you’re carb-loading or cutting back, Schwarzenegger’s advice underscores the importance of balance and individual preferences in optimizing your workout regimen.

In the newsletter, he suggested that instead of overloading with carbs, you can opt for coffee as a pre-workout. Despite the belief held by many that coffee is not good for health, the seven-time Mr. Olympia has shared insights into the impact of coffee on heart health, addressing misconceptions surrounding this beverage.

Arnold Schwarzenegger debunks the myth surrounding coffee

Contrary to the belief that any amount of coffee could harm the heart, Schwarzenegger emphasized that it can actually improve heart health, but moderation is key. Referring to a study involving 390,000 people, the fitness icon highlighted that moderate coffee (and tea) intake was linked to a significant 35% reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease. Additionally, coffee showed benefits in lowering the risk of chronic respiratory diseases.

However, Schwarzenegger cautioned against excessive caffeine consumption, noting that six or more cups per day could increase the risk of heart issues by up to 25%. He recommended a safer range of two to three cups, amounting to around 400 milligrams of coffee daily.
