Fans Infuriated as Canelo Alvarez Wins Sportsman of the Year Award after ‘Losing to a Prime Fighter and Winning vs an Old Man’

Four-division world champion, Canelo Alvarez, is widely regarded as one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters of all time. Alvarez has won multiple accolades for his sensational performances inside the ring, and also for being one of boxing’s finest paradigms outside the ring. In fact, it was reported that he recently added yet another feather to his rightfully packed cap.

GQ Mexico recently awarded Alvarez on the occasion of the ‘Men of the Year 2022’ awards. It was reported that he won the ‘Sportsman of the Year‘ award. The event also saw the champ look dapper, dressed in a classy windowpane suit and the iconic Air Jordan x Dior shoes.

It can be said the award is well-deserved as Alvarez showcased two fiery performances in 2022.

Alvarez was last seen inside the ring on September 12, 2022. He faced Gennady Golovkin at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. And went on to win the bout by decision. Moreover, in victory, he retained his WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles.

He also transitioned to the light-heavyweight division to face Dmitry Bivol on May 7, 2022. The bout that took place at the same venue saw him fight for Bivol’s WBA (Super) light-heavyweight title. However, he ended up losing the bout by decision.

Meanwhile, Alvarez revealed that he wishes to have a rematch with Bivol in September 2023.

Fans were not too happy with Canelo Alvarez winning the award

It seems like a lot of fans were not too happy with the prospect of Canelo Alvarez winning the ‘Sportsman of the Year’ award. In fact, a lot of fans took to social media to share their thoughts about the same.

A few fans felt that the award was undeserved. Moreover, they mentioned that he won the award for ‘losing to a prime fighter and winning vs an old man’.

Meanwhile, a few fans felt that athletes like Julio Urias, Cy Young, and Checo Perez were more deserving. Moreover, football Guillermo Ochoa was also considered a worthy contender.

However, a few fans also stood in solidarity with Alvarez. In fact, they congratulated him while also calling out the haters.
