Agreed, Devin Haney might not be one of the ‘faces of boxing.’ But is he so inconspicuous? No one has ever heard his name in the combat sports world. At least that’s what UFC Bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley reckons. Most fans are by now familiar with the ongoing tiff between O’Malley and Haney. The roots of the dispute between the two stem from the larger debate of whether mixed martial arts fighters have any chance against thoroughbred boxers in the squared circle.
It is almost a given that a boxer will barely survive a full fight in the Octagon. However, the recent fight put up by pro-boxing debutant Francis Ngannou against the Heavyweight champion, which includes a third-round knockdown, has somewhat given a great fillip to the MMA guys’ argument. But what about the franchises? Where do they stand if they have to intervene during such kick-ups? Sean O’Malley, for one, knows what the UFC’s position will be.
Devin Haney? Who??

Speaking on TimboSugarShow, ‘Sugar’ said, “The thing about Devin Haney is like I’m not trying to throw shade or anything, but I’ve legit…literally never watched him box one fight ever. I didn’t even nearly know who he was until more recent… like he’s one of the…like him Gervonta…there’s a guy like Shakur…” Co-host Tim Welch added that he had heard about Haney when he squared up against Vasyl Lomachenko.
O’Malley continued, “…so it’s like it’s yeah, I mean, I talked to the UFC about like potential boxing fights someday, and they’re like, that no one knows Devon Haney; that’s not there’s zero chance that ever happened; he’s just not a star; no one knows him; no one knows between him and Gervonta Davis; you go ask some random person which one’s which they’d be like…”

In The MMA Hour studio, Ariel Helwani asked whether Francis Ngannou had any chance against Tyson Fury. Devin Haney responded, “Of course not.” It’s a different matter that Francis Ngannou launched his attack on those who earlier questioned his prospects.
‘The Dream’ (not) so sweet with ‘Sugar’
Anyhow, ‘The Dream’ clarified that a cage is different from a ring. While he respects MMA fighters, it’s an altogether different ball game when it comes to pure boxing. Earlier in September, he and Sean O’Malley traded their first shots over X. When ‘The Dream’ posted, “Nothin will break me…” O’Malley responded with a cryptic, “I would.”

Finally, the unified Lightweight champion shot back, admonishing that the mixed martial arts guys obviously hadn’t matured yet. In a more recent exchange, the UFC champion asked the boxer for a meet-up when the latter told him not to go too far with his assumptions and stay humble.
