In 2001, Laila Ali squared off against Jacqui Frazier Lyde, the daughter of Joe Frazier at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona. The bout was scheduled for eight rounds and both fighters were undefeated at the time they stepped inside the boxing ring. Laila Ali was sixteen years younger than Frazier Lyde and won the fight via a majority decision putting a halt to Lyde’s winning streak.

Having defeated Frazier Lyde, Laila Ali appeared on the show ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire – Sports Superstars Edition’. While congratulating Ali on her recent victory in “a big epic bout,” host Regis Philbin, highlighting the subsequent attention and publicity, asked She Bee Stingin’ for her views regarding the Lyde fight. “How was that fight?” he asked.

“It was great. I really enjoyed whooping her butt,” replied Ali, relaxing and smiling. While in 1971 Joe Frazier defeated Muhammad Ali, Laila Ali, to borrow her own term, ‘whooped’ Frazier Lyde 30 years after her father’s defeat. Frazier beat Muhammad Ali via a unanimous decision and quite similarly, Laila Ali vanquished Frazier Lyde via a majority decision in the boxing ring.

Although Jacqui Frazier Lyde represented the fight that Laila Ali had to win in order to move closer to title fights, Ali admitted not taking Frazier Lyde seriously. However, Ali could not wait to get Frazier Lyde out of her way. Since Frazier Lyde started boxing after Ali, the latter had animosity towards Lyde. “I did not take her seriously. But I was just like, I cannot wait to just get her out of my way, dust her off, and go for these championship titles. Because she started boxing after I started boxing and I had animosity towards her.”
