Edson Arantes do Nascimento aka Pele was named after inventor Thomas Edison, who, among other necessities, invented the incandescent light bulb and illuminated life. Like Edison, Pele ignited the spirit of people with his magical and irradiating run on the football field.

In the film, the former Minister of Sports of Brazil played the role of Corporal Luis Fernandez, a prisoner who played against a German team. Towards the end of the movie, an injured Fernandez stumbled and dribbled and finally scored with a classic bicycle kick.
