Kell Brook Says “Absolute Monster” Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and Errol Spence Jr. Damaged, Destroyed, and Left Him With a Broken Eye

One of the greatest merits of learning a combat sport is that it serves as a reminder that someone will always bring the heat, keeping you on your toes. Ultimately, it’s a matter of time. A few fighters realize it early. But some come to grips with reality a bit later. Kell Brook‘s moment came in 2016.

In 2014, the Sheffield-born boxer won the IBF welterweight title. Till March 26, 2016, he had a good run, winning three title defenses. But a subsequent move to the middleweight division squared him up with the reigning unified champion, Gennady Golovkin. Now, only if Brook’s misery had stopped with the Kazakh boxer. From the frying pan, he fell into the fire. Days after celebrating his thirty-first birthday, he faced his second biggest test in Errol Spence Jr. Both outings ended in defeats. But as it appears, they not only caused physical pain but also inflicted damage on his psyche. Now years away from those showdowns, ‘Special K’ sat down with Simon Jordan, pouring his heart out.

Kell Brook joined ‘Up Front with Simon Jordan’ as the latest guest on the show presented by ‘William Simon’. Discussing a range of topics, Jordan, somewhere down the forty-minute mark, revealed how, back in the day, he felt learning that Brook would be going against Gennady Golovkin. One could see ‘Special K’s eyes rolling back to those years. While admitting the sheer monstrosity of Gennady Golovkin, he initially felt that he would be able to control the Athens Olympics silver medalist. But things didn’t turn out that way. He said, “Looking back at it, Gennady Golovkin was an absolute monster…I always thought that I could box him and keep out of the way, and that I was better, but as we know, it didn’t go down like that. It damaged me, and it changed me.

As it happened, the fight ended in the fifth round with Brook’s throwing in the towel. His eye socket were damaged and needed surgery. Per the physician, reportedly, had he taken a more severe hit, he could have lost his vision for ever.

‘The Trust’ Eventually Comes Out The Winner

Simon then checked how big an impact that loss had when he went against Errol Spence Jr. The loss to ‘Triple G’ could have been excused given that he moved two divisions up. Kell Brook said that while the first loss impacted, the aftereffects of the second loss were much worse.

He shared, “It was still a big impact, but the second loss, when we get to that that that was the real loss for me, right? I think, but because I probably it wasn’t as bad because you (Golovkin) were a unified middleweight beast still middleweight beast, and I think that took a little bit off it, but I still lost, and I was still absolutely devastated, but what really destroyed me with with a with a with the Errol Spence loss.

During the conversation, Kell Brook explained that he could have probably won the Spence Jr. fight. However, that could have happened had he not suffered the loss to Golovkin in 2016. then perhaps he would have But three years later, a twist of fate brought the Sheffield-born boxer to the doors of another great boxer. On November 14, he faced Terence Crawford. It was Brook’s last attempt at a world title. Unfortunately, once again, fortune wasn’t on his side, as the Nebraskan won by a fourth-round referee stoppage.
