Julio Cesar Chavez is an integral part of boxing history. In his long-standing career, the fighter was a feared opponent, who clashed with the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Mike Powell, and Tony Lopez. Through his stellar run in the sport, he rose infamously as the ‘Mexican Warrior’. Years later, when his punches became a matter of legend, he described what it is to be a true Mexican Warrior in the ring.

In his career of 115 bouts, Chavez won a stellar 107, marking each of these fights with his revered prowess. Through these fights, he earned some of the biggest paychecks in the sport. When he hung his gloves in 2005, he left a vacuum that will be hard to fill for years to come. Now, decades later, he has outlined the criteria for someone to attain his moniker.

Who is a Mexican Warrior? Julio Cesar Chavez notes

In an exclusive interview with Boxing News Plus, the 61-year-old Mexican fame explained, “Well, a Mexican warrior is someone who fights for the full three minutes of the round in every round. A fighter that always comes forward, doesn’t care about getting hit as long as they land.” While the former 6-time world champion spoke in Spanish, it was however it translated to English by the boxing insider.

Well, that sums up Chavez’s boxing career. His ability to rise to fame, and transgress all that came his way put Mexico on the map. A true representation of his culture and a defender of it. While he shaped his career so eloquently, his son, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., suggests he’s ready to come back to the ring after a major setback.

Junior Julio Cesar Chavez is set to enter the ring again

A while ago, reports had emerged that Junior was struggling with drug issues and has been seeking treatment for the same. Now, in recent clarifications, Chavez told Boxing King, “I’m fine, I feel good. I’m going to fight in January or February, I’m healthy and ready for that.” He added, “There’s been a lot of shit going on around me, but here I am, all good.”

He has been absent from the ring since 2021, a year that witnessed his participation in two bouts: a split decision loss to Anderson Silva in June and a subsequent unanimous decision victory against David Zegarra in December.

Julio Cesar Chavez is truly a legend. A personification of the moniker, “Mexican Warrior.” Will his son be able to live up to his name? With his return, it is interesting to see if he will.
