“All That Energy From Mexico Is…” – Canelo Alvarez on Fighting During Cinco de Mayo Weekend

On May 7, Canelo Alvarez will head towards his 61st battle in professional boxing. He will face Russian boxer Dmitry Bivol with the latter’s WBA title at stake. They both are 31 and still in the prime of their lives. However, Alvarez has been around for more than a decade now.

As a result, when it comes to fighting experience, there’s simply no equal to the Mexican phenom. Over the years, he’s had the privilege to share the ring with some bests in the business. And because of that, the 4-division world champion vividly displays the growth of the person and athlete he is today.

Being a Mexican, it is always special to perform during Cinco de Mayo. Recently, Pro Boxing Fans had an encounter with champion Canelo Alvarez. Alvarez was asked about his feelings about the opportunity to fight in front of an energetic Mexican Crowd during Cinco de Mayo.

He said, “Yeah, I know it’s very special for me always, all my fights, especially on Cinco de Mayo weekends, on September to Independence weekend. It’s amazing feeling. You know, feel all that energy from Mexico is amazing.

The last time when Canelo Alvarez fought on Cinco de Mayo weekend, it was against Billy Joe Saunders. The fight took place at the AT&T Stadium, Arlington, on May 8, 2021. Alvarez won the fight via corner stoppage. Then there was Daniel Jacobs, whom Canelo Alvarez fought on May 4, 2019. The fight went the distance and Alvarez won via decision.

Some other big names Alvarez took on during the Cinco de Mayo weekend are Amir Khan, Shane Mosley, Jose Miguel Cotto, James Kirkland, and Cesar Chavez Jr. With Cesar Chavez Jr. Alvarez won via decision, with Khan and Kirkland, he won with a KO, against Cotto, Alvarez won by TKO and finally, with Shane Mosley, he won via decision.
