“One thing I thought about when preparing for this interview is the idea of idols becoming rivals,” stated Jay Hill. What began as mentorship gradually morphed into tension – and possibly a bitter rivalry. Hill noted that once a person is no longer useful, they are often cast aside. While he clarified that he wasn’t directly accusing Floyd Mayweather Jr., he suggested that he had personally experienced similar situations.

Davis agreed with the perspective. When you admire someone from a distance, you often form an idealized image of them. However, once you get close, they may not be who they seem. It can be a ‘letdown,’ he emphasized. “I’ve been in situation where, though, like, you know, I was in a lose-lose situation now came out still on top,” said ‘Tank’ Davis.

His comment piqued Jay Hill’s curiosity. What did Davis mean when he said he was put in a ‘lose-lose’ situation? According to Davis, Floyd Mayweather Jr. placed him in a difficult position when he was just 21 years old.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Gervonta Davis: When cracks started to show

The incident occurred around the time he faced José Pedraza for his first world title. Having been out of the ring for seven to eight months, Davis was struggling financially. The extended gap between fights left him in a desperate situation – he was evicted and had to sell his belongings.

Davis claimed that Mayweather Jr. pressured him into taking the Pedraza fight, warning that if he refused, he wouldn’t get another opportunity. “He was like, you gotta fight this fighter, which is Jose Pedraza. If you don’t fight him, you’re not fighting, stated the lightweight champion. Jay Hill then asked, “So do you think Floyd did that intentionally?” “Yeah, for sure, yeah,” Davis replied.

It’s always unfortunate when a relationship turns sour. At their peak, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Gervonta Davis created magic together, producing some of the most exciting performances in recent boxing history. But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Could the Mayweather-Davis fallout mark one of boxing’s most dramatic splits? Who would have thought it would come to this?
