The debate following the USA Boxing adopting the ‘Transgender Policy’ seems to have stirred up a hornet’s nest. Voices continue to discuss the merits and demerits of the approach. However, in the melee, WBC seems to have come aground, stating where it stands.

Reportedly written in 2022, USA Boxing appears to have brought the ‘Transgender Policy’ into force beginning this year. The stated purpose reads, “…to provide fairness and safety for all boxers.” It is applicable to both male and female divisions. However, the portion pertaining to the women’s category is the one that has now become the bone of contention. Basically, the policy states that under specific conditions, a boxer who has transitioned from a male to a female can now partake in female boxing competitions.

Clear Rejection: The WBC President’s Strong Stand

So taking to his X/Twitter handle, Mauricio Sulaiman said, “The WBC has been actively working on this very important topic, and is our absolute policy that there must never be a fight between a born man against a born woman, regardless of their current sexuality. It’s genetic XX vs. XX yes, XY vs. XY yes …. XX vs. XY no. Very simple NO.

The pictorial graph depicts hormonal distinctions. So what happens when someone with XX hormones, i.e., a male, fights another person with XX hormones? The bout stands approved. Next, if a person with XY hormones, i.e., a female, squares up against another person with XY hormones? Then, too, the fight is good to go. However, where a person’s hormones read XX but are pitted against an XY, which is a female? It’s an outright rejection.

From the reactions, most of the followers appeared to agree with Sulaiman’s pointers. One of those who commented wrote, “Very good to hear your stance at the WBC. Other sports are doing unfair things to naturally born women. I’m glad the WBC got it right.

An exclusive group

Back in 2022, the WBC announced that in 2023, it would introduce a separate category for transgender athletes to participate in. Mauricio Sulaiman said, “It is the time to do this, and we are doing this because of safety and inclusion. We have been the leaders in rules for women’s boxing — so the dangers of a man fighting a woman will never happen because of what we are going to put in place.” On the flip side, per available information, however, the plan seems to have been put on the back burner. A lack of enthusiasm among fighters might have led to the shift.
