The lightweight division is on fire! Amidst the slanging match with Shakur Stevenson, there are rumors of Devin Haney fancying a slugfest with Regis Prograis at 140 pounds. So where does that leave the rest of the stars in the 135-pound division? Gervonta Davis is on the prowl. Talks abound on the possible line-ups for ‘Tank.’ With Terence Crawford seemingly uninterested in a match with him, Stevenson and Frank Martin remain viable options. A recent episode, incidentally, involved Davis and Martin. Given what the former mentioned in an interview, a possible clash appears in the crosshairs.

It should be noted that Shakur Stevenson and Frank Martin have received marching orders from WBC to settle the vacant Lightweight business. This happened since Haney expressed interest in moving up a division to meet Prograis. As much as these matchups might enthuse a keen observer, a Gervonta Davis-Frank Martin clash under no circumstances could be termed second-string.

Gervonta Davis vs. Frank Martin, sparring that allegedly went south

So, Akhi TV uploaded a video on YouTube narrating the incident a few days ago. As their report goes, during a recent sparring session, ‘The Ghost’ reportedly sparred with ‘Tank’ at Floyd Mayweather Jr.‘s gym. Though he borrowed the undefeated former champion’s gear, he reportedly gave Gervonta Davis a run for his money. Something the latter refutes ever happened. Soon, things heated up between the two. Finally, others intervened and separated them.

So, according to the channel, if the incident holds, the Stevenson-Martin bout becomes all the more critical. While Terence Crawford mentors the former, Frank Martin comes from Errol Spence Jr.‘s stable. Hence, there’s even a tempting possibility of the two fighting on the card of the senior’s rematch. But they concluded that Gervonta Davis remains a force to reckon with.

Hope from both ends, but…

The footage also covers a media session with ‘The Ghost.’ Taking up the recent sparring, a reporter asked whether a fight with Davis could be one he aspires to have. Martin replied, “Yeah, we can make that happen. That’ll be a fight; I want you [to] know if the opportunity presents itself…

Interestingly, thoughts do not differ at the other end. Addressing a few reporters, Gervonta Davis replied, “Yeah, for sure..,” when one of the reporters asked whether he would entertain any fight with Frank Martin in the future.

‘The Ghost,’ even though sans any belts or titles, remains undefeated in his four-year-old career. Twelve of the eighteen victories came through knockouts. If it is true that he was able to give Gervonta Davis a tough time, then any line-up, be it against Shakur Stevenson or Davis himself, makes it an encouraging prospect.
