In the wake of Canelo Alvarez demanding $200 million to fight David Benavidez, Andre Ward, the former unified Light-Heavyweight champion has made some major statements. According to Ward, the Mexican boxer has been very selective of his opponents and time. Ward said that when Alvarez fought Sergey Kovalev in 2019, the Russian fighter was already “cooked“. Replying to this, Alvarez argued that Ward wanted a “payday” i.e. a fight against the current undisputed Super-Middleweight champion!

In addition, as Mike Tyson came to know that Alvarez initially rejected $60 million to fight Benavidez and demanded $200 million, ‘Iron’ wondered if Saul was “afraid of losing.” To which, in a fiery reply, Canelo claimed Tyson was drunk. In this context, ‘S.O.G.’ found Alvarez mentally weak.

After Canelo Alvarez demanded $200 million to fight David Benavidez, the latter requested His Excellency Turki Alalshikh to organize the fight in Saudi Arabia. In case he lost the fight, Benavidez even promised to donate his purse to a charity of Alalshikh’s liking. At this, in light of Alvarez’s “payday” claim, FightHype asked Andre Ward whether or not he would be interested in facing the Mexican in Saudi Arabia for $200 million. “Well, first of all, I’m going to just say he never called my name,” began Ward.

He’s had plenty of opportunities to call my name. And one specific opportunity was after he fought Kovalev. So, that’s not something he wants to do. All the stuff about payday and this and that, you can use that toward the other guys. [But,] they don’t fit for me,” Ward added, replying to Alvarez’s “payday” claim. “I don’t think he realizes that. That shows a lot of mental weakness when that’s your first reaction,” he announced.

Along similar lines, Ward reacted to Canelo’s latest response to Mike Tyson.

Ward disapproves of Saul’s response to Mike Tyson

After Mike Tyson disapproved of Canelo Alvarez rejecting the $60 million initially offered, Canelo had said, “I would respect his opinion if he was sober.” To this, Ward said, “So, if Mike Tyson says something about you that you don’t like, you got to be able to sit up under that. Either take it or have a response that warrants what’s being said about you.” Along these lines, Ward, now a boxing commentator, mentioned that no one could silence him in the sport even if they disliked his views.
