Sunny Edwards: Rumbling Back

In a tweet, IFL TV asked, “Who wins?” Confirming a news story, they updated, “@SunnyEdwards will take on former IBF world light-flyweight champion Adrian Curiel on the Estrada/Rodriguez undercard in Arizona on June 29th.”

Nearly three years ago, Sunny Edwards became the IBF flyweight champion. The two-time English national champion subsequently defended the belt four times successfully. Last year, after joining the Matchroom ranks, he defeated Andres Campos at Wembley Stadium. Thereafter, he announced a move to unify the titles. Edwards and Rodriguez, the WBO flyweight title holder, finally met at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Unfortunately, the tightly fought contest ended in the ninth round when Edwards’ corner decided enough and threw in the towel to stop the fight.

Now, per the latest available news, Jesse Rodriquez has reportedly told IBF about relinquishing the flyweight title. That way, he could stake a claim to the WBC super flyweight title held by Estrada.

The Foe in His Backyard

Matchroom Boxing uploaded a short video. It showed Sunny Edwards and Eddie Hearn mulling over the fight agreement, discussing its pros and cons. The Matchroom honcho could be seen taking the former champion through the risks involved, such as fighting in front of an overwhelmingly Mexican crowd. Later, though, he appreciated Edwards for taking up the fight, which has all the hallmarks of great context. “I love that you taking the fight; I think he’s a great fight for you,” said Hearn.

Adrian Curiel, on the other hand, went through a mixed bag of a journey with his first title win over former world champion Sivenathi Nontshinga on November 4, last year. But his happiness didn’t last long. Three months later, the South African Nontshinga paid him back in the same coin and took away the belt. So in a way, both Sunny Edwards and Adrian Curiel are looking for redemption.
