It’s not just his fans who remain concerned about the antics of Ryan Garcia. Even the WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has had a discussion with the New York State Athletic Commission about the issue ahead of the fighter’s bout with Devin Haney. Will the sanctioning body intervene if things get worse?

After a series of concerning posts emerged on Garcia’s social media, his fans flagged concerns about his mental well-being. While the posts have been speculated to be a promotional strategy for his upcoming fight, some wonder if the fighter is not feeling completely right. However, for the WBC president, Mauricio Sulaiman, it’s a concern that he is closely looked into.

On April 20th, ‘KingRy’ will fight the two-division champion, Devin Haney, for his WBC super lightweight title at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The venue of the showdown falls under the jurisdiction of the New York State Athletic Commission, which, along with the WBC, will be sanctioning the event. Hence, if the tomfoolery gets out of hand, it could potentially lead to the cancellation of the fight by the NYSAC and the WBC. However, the question remains whether the organizers would take such drastic measures.

To talkSPORT, in a vehement voice, Sulaiman revealed that such concerns have already been raised with the NYSAC. “Yes, absolutely. We’re in direct talks with the New York Commission where the fight is to take place,” he noted, “With the postings by Ryan Garcia, of course, there has come a lot of concern in a diverse array of topics.”

He revealed, “But I have spoken to him. He’s a very nice kid. He has a full training camp going on, and I believe he will be in a position to fight but we are addressing the situation without a doubt.” Both the WBC and the NYSAC are set to sanction the fight. Hence, they will need to ensure that both fighters are in the right headspace before they compete.

The situation has escalated to the extent that even the sanctioning bodies are now questioning whether the fight should proceed as originally planned. However, many also suspect that the shenanigans may simply be a tactic by Ryan Garcia to generate interest surrounding the fight. In a recent interview, the same was also insinuated by his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya.

In conversation with Fight Hub TV, ‘Golden Boy’ was quizzed on the antics of his feuding fighter. Clarifying that California-based Ryan Garcia was safe, he noted, “Look, that’s his style, that’s his way. I don’t talk to him every single day, but from what I’ve seen, when he’s in the gym, he’s looking sharp, he’s looking ready, he’s looking fit.” So what is all the social media frenzy about then? Without concretizing anything, he revealed something the fighter once told him.

De La Hoya recalled, “Look, I’ll never forget the time he told me, ‘Look, I’m going to do the biggest troll in the world’. I don’t really know what that means, but I guess he did it. I guess he’s doing it,”
