Who does Canelo Alvarez fight on May 4? This is one question that has puzzled everyone. The clock is ticking, yet there is no official announcement. Why? There is trouble between the Mexican champion and his promotion, the PBC.

Since defeating Jermell Charlo last September, fans and pundits have speculated about his opponent. While the list of suitors is long, there has been no concrete rumor to rely on. Now alarming reports are emerging, if Boxing Kingdom is to be believed.

The social media handle suggested on its X handle that the super middleweight champion and the PBC are in disagreement over whom he should defend his straps against. Reports are now circulating that PBC & Canelo are running into issues over his opponent selection for May 5th, they wrote in a post.

The details of Alvarez’s next opponent have been sketchy, with the only confirmed information being that his opponent will be an American. While The Ring has claimed that it is Jermall Charlo, the ‘Hitman’ himself has denied such claims. However, ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez has reported that the PBC has set its heart on Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KO).

Moreover, the PBC would happily pay Alvarez’s guaranteed $35 million purse if he agreed to fight Munguia. But if he fails to do so and explores other options, the 33-year-old champion might not pocket the same amount. Notably, the PBC and Alvarez inked a three-fight deal last year, and Jermell Charlo started things off after the elder Charlo twin, Jermall extended his layoff.

With two more fights left on his contract and the PBC finalizing a deal with Amazon Prime, Al Haymon’s promotion might not want to force his hand, something that even the WBC is unable to do. Alvarez has been avoiding David Benavidez, who has been the interim champion for over two years, and Julio Cesar Chavez believes the champion has earned his right to do so.

Alvarez has a right to pick his opponents

“He is within his rights to fight whoever he wants, you know what I mean?” Chavez told Fight Hub TV. According to the boxing legend, Alvarez has done enough for boxing to dictate his terms. But that might affect ‘The Mexican Monster’ and fans who have been waiting for the fight to happen.

I hail from a family of passionate sports lovers, especially combat sports. It is from there that I realized how aptly combat sports embody life. The words of Jeremy Lesniak, "It's not about learning to fight, it's about learning to be better through the expression of action" resonated with the interest I had in combat sports.
