Former super middleweight champion Caleb Plant shocked the boxing world after beating Anthony Dirrell. Plant secured what might be the knockout of the year after he landed a clean left hook, sending Dirrell to the canvas in the ninth round.
The punch made Dirrell drop to the floor, unconscious and in need of medical attention. Following this, ‘Sweet Hands’ even stood over Dirrell while pretending to dig a grave with a shovel as he received medical treatment. This resulted in Plant being booed and also held back by the referee for his over-the-top celebration. During the celebration, the commentators were also quick to call him out “Oh no, don’t do that. Don’t do that.” said one commentator.

Although Plant was under heavy fire for not being concerned about his fallen opponent, he did explain his actions for the celebration. Despite his explanation, many felt that the celebration was a bit too much.

Plant suffered the only loss of his career to Alvarez after he was stopped by the Mexican last November. However, Plant revealed that he would not let this setback affect his career. In an interview with Boxing Junkie, he claimed that while he had short-term goals in mind; he was eventually eyeing a rematch with the undisputed super middleweight champion. “My main goal, so close to this fight, is to focus on the fight in front of me. … It’s hard to say what the road will look like, but it would be to do whatever I need to to get a rematch with Canelo, then pick off one top super middleweight at a time. That’s what I want.” He said.
Alvarez is also coming off a victory over Gennady Golovkin and now has his sights set on a rematch with Dmitry Bivol. However, with Plant’s dominant performance, a potential rematch between the two could be a possibility in the future.
