Derrick James got a text. Interestingly, it wasn’t a fight announcement, but something more serious. It read: Errol Spence Jr might change his trainer. Derrick chuckled, glancing at Spence Jr. sitting beside him. The idea was laughable. Spence Jr. would never abandon the man who had been his corner since the very beginning. After the Terence Crawford loss, Spence Jr. was devastated and because of James’s guidance, he’s been able to find the confidence to call for the rematch.

Their last fight against Terence Crawford was a brutal lesson. Crawford dominated, leaving Spence questioning his future. Yet, Spence Jr., fueled by a desire for redemption, has activated the rematch clause. However, now it seems like the rematch with Terence Crawford probably won’t happen because Spence Jr. is currently in recovery after an eye surgery. But are there any chances that he might change his trainer for his next fight? If he does Calvin Ford would be happy to take him under his wing, provided he fulfils this one clause.

Gervonta Davis‘s trainer Calvin Ford sat down for a conversation on The Rize Podcast. That’s where he was asked if he’d ever train Errol Spence Jr. if he were ever given the chance. Ford replied, “First I’d go to Derrick James, and get permission from Derrick James. That’s the first thing I’d do. If Derrick give me his blessings, 100% I’d jump in with both feet because he’s a good friend of Tank’s. You get what I’m saying?

Notably, Ford hasn’t trained any other fight that is as big as ‘Tank’, so he’d not shy away from tutoring another big fighter like Errol Spence Jr. However, Ford also holds huge respect for Derrick James. So for that reason, he mentioned that he’d continue this path only if he received the green flag from James, then only he’d proceed to train James.

Ford also talked about who’d be the ideal opponent for Errol Spence Jr. for his anticipated comeback to the squared circle. So, Ford didn’t particularly take a name, but he definitely gave crucial advice to ‘The Truth’ about his next anticipated comeback fight.

In the same video, the follow-up question that was put up to Ford was, who does he see as an ideal opponent for Spence Jr’s return fight? Well, Ford didn’t take a name, and he stated that if he was his trainer he’d ask him this question. As he would never want to impose his choice on a fighter, else he’d like to know the name he wants to take on next. Ford believes that Spence Jr. would have a name in his mind.

Ford stated that he’d want to see Spence Jr. fight at 154. And then he mentioned, “See, that’s the thing, I gotta see what he wants. Because everything he wants, I’ll make him own up to it.” The host stated that the obvious answer to this question would actually never happen. Ford insisted on knowing this answer, and the name turned out to be Keith Thurman. So Ford repeated, “That’s why ask that question to Errol Spence. He need to have to sit down and say that’s who I wanna fight.
