Canelo Alvarez is preparing himself for the year-opening fight on May 4. The undisputed super middleweight champion will face Tijuana, Mexico-born Jaime Munguia, at the T-Mobile Arena. The fight transpires after months of talks and discussions failed to bring about a potential opponent for Alvarez. However, it also meant that he would have to work in close proximity with his former promoter, Oscar De La Hoya.

Munguia has been fighting under the Golden Boys banner since 2018. During the press conference, many felt a sort of cold tension between Alvarez and De La Hoya. Those moments grabbed considerable attention across the media, it seems. So is there any possibility of the two sides holding out the olive branch to each other? Speaking with Fight Hub TV, the super middleweight champion gave his two-bit on the status quo.

Eminent sports journalist Manouk Akopyan interviewed Canelo Alvarez. Initially, the two went over the Munguia fight. Then Akopyan asked the undisputed champion, saying that he seems to enjoy a great relationship with Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn. Now, given the upcoming fight, he stands on the same dais with Oscar De La Hoya. However, it appears that he isn’t too happy about it. So the boxing and MMA commentator checked, “I’m just curious what needs to happen in order for you to repair the working relationship with De La Hoya and maybe even have some friendly shots of tequila afterwards.”

Alvarez replied matter-of-factly, “No, I don’t. I don’t. I don’t, I’m I’m not interested in to to be a friend with him. Um, I’m good where I am, and I have nothing to with him.” He wished De La Hoya all the best for his future endeavors. But Alvarez revealed that he doesn’t want the Olympic gold medalist to be a part of his life. “I don’t want him near from me close to me um I don’t want that kind of vibe (?) on my life,” he said.

It was reportedly in 2010 that Canelo Alvarez joined Golden Boy Promotions. The following years saw him scale the heights of boxing. However, by 2020, things had gone downhill. Alvarez filed a lawsuit against Golden Boy and DAZN, seeking a release from the $365 million contract signed in 2018.

From Court to Ring

The Mexican icon was reportedly unhappy over the two sides not fulfilling their part of commitments vis-à-vis the 5-year-11 fight deal. He sought damages to the tune of $280 million. However, the parties seemingly reached an agreement, and Alvarez came out of the contract by November 2020.

On his part, Oscar De La Hoya spoke about engaging with Canelo Alvarez once again. He said, “It feel it feels great, just like just like a another one, another fight in the books, I guess, right for us uh we’re we’re extremely happy and proud um that that we can literally get our fighters in this position. You know, just the way I got Canelo in this position now it’s Jaime and uh and boxing just continues to thrive, and that’s what it’s all about. If we can work with promoters the way we’re working with Canelo, the way we’re working with, uh, PBC fights happen.”

It will indeed be a sign of good times if two of the biggest names in boxing do come together and get big fights, with great paydays going to each fan’s delight.
