David Benavidez has been chasing Canelo Alvarez for quite a while now. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman had even stated that Benavidez will become Canelo’s official mandatory challenger in March, but a fight between the two will not be mandated until after Canelo’s upcoming bout. Canelo Alvarez is set to defend his super-middleweight title this May 4th. Benavidez was the at top of the potential opponents’ list. However, in a twist of events, after receiving no confirmation for a bout, Benavidez’s team grew impatient with the situation and decided to move on.

They revealed their intentions to step up to the light-heavyweight division to take on Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June instead. Not long ago, Jose Benavidez Sr., David’s father, claimed that Canelo is afraid of his son, suggesting that David’s chances of getting a fight in the future are slim. He even mentioned that if Canelo didn’t grant them a shot at the super middleweight title, they would have to move to Light Heavyweight, a move they have just made. In response, Canelo Alvarez’s trainer and manager, Eddy Reynoso, called out Benavidez’s team for the taunt.

As Michael Benson reported in his tweet, Reynoso has not taken kindly to their accusations. Alvarez is one of the most sought-after boxers currently. He has climbed to the pinnacle of boxing and fear is not what helped him. “I find it in very bad taste that they say that Canelo is afraid of him,” said Reynoso and went on to list the beasts Alvarez has battled with.

“I don’t know how they dare to classify a fighter as fearful who did not hesitate to face Floyd Mayweather, who faced Miguel Cotto, who faced the fearsome Gennady Golovkin when he had knocked out half the world, who rose to light-heavyweight risking everything to face Dmitry Bivol. The reality is that none of the big promoters have given me an offer to fight Benavidez,” he added. Apparently, no promoter has made an offer to Alvarez to fight the ‘Mexican Monster’, according to Canelo’s trainer. But what about the alleged offer that was revealed by Jose Benavidez Sr.
