It’s being described as the worst climatic disaster to have hit the country in the last 80 years. Per the latest available news, thousands of people moved to safety after floods devastated adjoining regions of Russia and north-western Kazakhstan. As the world awakens to this tragedy, far across from Mexico, Canelo Alvarez shared his concerns over an Instagram story. He told the affected people that they were not alone in this moment of sorrow.
The undisputed super middleweight will return to the ring next month to face a new opponent. On May 4, Cinco de Mayo weekend, he will face fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia at the T Mobile Arena. It would be his fourth title defense. He has been on a winning streak after the Bivol loss. After the first title defense against Gennady Golovkin, last year he fought and defeated John Ryder and Jermell Charlo.

According to some accounts, because of the floods, reportedly ten regions of Kazakhstan were brought under emergency. The unexpectedly swift and premature advent of warm weather, it seems, led to the melting of huge quantities of snow. That, in turn, overfilled several rivers spread across the Russian and Kazakh areas. This has been cited as the major reason behind this calamity. It seems heavy rains only made matters worse. So Canelo Alvarez wrote, “Praying for the people of Kazakhstan, Atyrau, and Oral. We stand with you.” His message displayed the flag of the Central Asian country as well.

The city of Oral in Kazakhstan, which derives its name from the river Ural, which is Europe’s third-largest river, and the city of Orenburg in Russia seem to have borne the brunt of flooding as swelling water levels broke through the banks. According to Reuters, over one hundred thousand people in both Kazakhstan and Russia shifted to a place of safety.
From the Vatican, Pope Francis too joined many others in expressing concern for the safety and well-being of the affected citizens. He reportedly said, “I also want to convey to the people of Kazakhstan my spiritual closeness at this time, when a massive flood has affected many regions of the country and caused the evacuation of thousands of people from their homes.” As of now, experts are closely monitoring the weather conditions to observe any changes. Several new agencies revealed the provision of necessary items such as food, medicine, etc. on war footing.
But it would not be the first time that the undisputed super middleweight champion lends his voice to a cause.
Canelo Alvarez for Everyone
Back in 2013, severe flooding on account of Hurricane Manuel‘s landfall led to considerable loss of life and damage to property. One of the worst-affected areas was the state of Guerrero. Canelo Alvarez and his team not only visited the area but also took a pledge to construct over eighty houses and reestablish three schools.
Likewise, with its epicenter in Mexico’s Puebla state, an earthquake of 7.1 magnitude struck on September 19, 2017. Reportedly, over three hundred people lost their lives, with over six thousand left injured. Once again, Canelo Alvarez was at the forefront of the relief effort. Apart from donating a million dollars, he provided truckloads of supplies to those struck by the devastating calamity.

Kazakhstan-based ‘The Astana Times’ shared some of the efforts taken to help out the flood victims. The auction of various paraphernalia of celebrities is one of the best and easiest methods in that direction. Among several items purchased, a t-shirt of legend Gennady Golovkin reportedly fetched over two thousand dollars.
